So there I was looking over the items at a garage sale today when I saw a transfer case on the floor, I looked it over and saw a tag that read 208AM so I bought it...... 25 smackers. Now the tech question, if the case is in 4HI or LO how much slack is allowable? What I mean is if you put the case in 4HI or LO and hold the rear output yoke still and turn the front output how many degrees of play indicating chain slack are allowable?
Does anyone make an overhaul kit for these cases?
Will I be able to use my existing HI /LO selector lever after removing the vacuum stuff or do I have to fab something up?
Thanks,
Dave
Sorry, I can't help you with the slack question but did you check that it's a Jeep 208? Chev 208's are pass side drop.
Dive30 is in the process of putting a 208 and the linkage from the 208 that came behind an AT is very similar to that of the 229. The linkage appears to be an easy swap. Phil(Dive30) has a link in his post with a pic of the two linkages. I don't remember the name of the thread but it's current. Just look for one started by him.

I think the tag reading 208AM indicates that it was used in American Motors vehicles. I dont know how much slack is allowed by that measurement method. For 25 bucks how could you go wrong???

Bolt it up! You'll need a longer rear driveshaft 'cause the 208 (you do have the right one) is 5 inches shorter than a NP229. The linkages match, too. The only thing is to learn the new shift pattern if your keeping your original floor shifter. Otherwise, the 208 shifter will match up too! Do a search in the Tech Archives for '208 swap' - there's plenty of info...
Good luck!

SLACK? I'd say as long as the chain ain't rubbin on the inside of the case it'll do in a pinch.

I have a good 229 for now so I have time, I guess Napa should be able to locate a chain and the seals for the overhaul
