View Full Version : Any idea where these carb hoses should go?

I am still battling the emissions thing. I have now moved on to the carb. There are two hoses which a PO has capped with screws. They are number in this picture. Any idea where they should go and whether that would affect the HC number on an emissions test. Thanks.

#2 looks like it belongs to the CTO that's on that side of the manifold toward the front. Mine has 2 nipples - the carb attaches to the upper and the EGR attaches to the lower.
#1 looks like the bowl vent, and I think it's hooked to the vapor separator and then the charcoal canister on mine.
Yours may not have had this stuff, so I can't help too much but maybe this will get the ball rolling for you.
What carb do you have?

It's a Holley 4 barrel. The horn says 1850-4 and under that I think is 3574. Funny story, I go into the auto parts stores around my house and give them this number and ask for a gasket/rebuild kit. They say they need a model number. I give them this and they say, no we need a model number. If you go to Holley's website, the 1850 still exists there. They say no that's not a Holley number... They have all given me ideas on where to look and all the ideas have turned up nothing. So I won;t be rebuilding the carb to try and pass emissions I guess. Hopefully, replacing the cap, rotor, wires, plugs and air cleaner combined with maybe turning the mixture screws in a bit(although I have not yet found a diagram to show me what screw to turn...) will get me past the emissions. If not, I may just sell the beast for as close to what I paid as I can get and wait until a 60's truck shows up for sale and then to hell with the environmental nazis.

Well then I guess you can ignore what I said, since I have no clue about a Holley 4 bbl. Gotta love those parts counter guys, don't you?? :D

do you have a pict of the whole carb?
Here is my best guess.....
#2 could be either a power valve..... which should go to intake manifold... (i am thinking 2150 here)
one way would be to connect a vacuum gauge to #2 and see if you read any vacuum at different rpm..... if no vacuum at idle but increase as rpm go up ... then it is a carb ported vacuum if no reading..... go to next
connect a manual vacuum gauge and applying vaccum at idle.... see if the exhaust smell richer or leaner, then it would be a power valve

Here is the passenger side of the carb and second is the drivers side of the carb. My truck has no diagram for the vacuum lines, so I'm just kinda flying blind.

That is a Holley model 1850 (possibly a -1). I sold them when I was 18. (long ago)
Your hose number 1 is the ported distributor vacuum tap. Number 2 is manifold vacuum. it can be used for pretty much anything you want.
