I'm getting around to bolting on the Performer intake onto my '78's 360, and the first order of business is cleaning the thing up. It's somewhat oxidized, plus grungy and stained.

I'm looking for some kind of aluminum cleaner that I can just brush on and rinse off, which will dissolve the grease and oxidation, leaving me with a shiny new manifold. It also has to be available to the consumer (none of those "Oh, we've got a 55-gallon drum of stuff in our nuclear plant that works wonders!").

Aluminum wheel cleaner doesn't do much of anything for getting it clean. I'm not up for polishing it with a manifold polishing kit from Eastwood; it's just going to get muddy anyway. In fact, I might just paint it, but I want to make a clean surface for the paint to stick to.

We have some stuff at work called ALL BRITE or something like that. It is used to clean the fuel tanks on our Trucks. I think if you were to go to a Truck Shop and ask for tank Cleaner or Alumi Brite.....Several types I think you would be able to get it. I buy it once in a great while at a Western Star dealer but it has been awhile, I can not recall what it is called for sure. however the Tank Cleaner Works real well. It will strip off the oxidation, grease, leave it clean!! but I would not say Shiny more like a Dull look till the piece is polished.

Sometimes oven cleaner works pretty good. Don't leave it on very long though and wash it down good after your done.
