I just bought a 1979 J-10 with a 258. I have noticed a collection of oil I believe on the intake/exhast side(looks like on the block?). When I get the motor warmed up it startes to boil. I don't thank oil boiled at operating temp? Should I replace the vale cover gasget? Also I also believe the power sterring pump is going out, because when I turn hard it screams. And when warmed up and drivening it just cuts off. Doesn't choke down, maybe carb. needs adjusting.

Replace the valve cover gasket...they all leak after 100,000 miles or 30 days whichever come first.
Low fluid will make the PS howl as will turning it hard over to lock even when it's full and in good condition.

258's for the most part have leaky valve covers, take a nut driver and
snug up all the bolts, see if that is good enough. Do not over tighten
as all that will do is bend the cover up and make it leak more.
The oil is most likely boiling on the mainfiold/head over the exaust ports
which run much hotter than everything else, so unless there is someother
indication that you are running hot I would not think to much of it, other
than the risk of it burnning.

With the power sterring, if I just barely turn the sterring wheel when stoped it screams. But I thank it is getting better, I have only had it for 2 weeks. And it has been sitting up for a couple of years probly.

On the valve cover, I have found that if I torque the bolts down evenly (like on a mainfold) with a little resistance it seals better.
I also got rid of the stock cover an bought a Clifford Performance cover some years ago. It still leaks, but not nearly as much.

the pwer steering units are bad about squeling, i have a new pump on my truck and it squels if i turn the wheels when driving slow. the engine cuts off most likely because of the pickup coil, that is what mine did, untill i replaced it.
