Anyone done this? What needs to be changed to accomplish (valve covers, pushrods, studs, guideplates, etc.)?
Thanks for any info!
(tried a search in all forums and nothing?)

I looked into this for the future.... 1.6 Magnum Roller Rockers is what I have been told will work with all other components plus bring it to life.... OEM rockers are 1.5, I'm not sure of the puch rods, but the factory covers will still work. I have been quoted $169.99 for the set at a local speed shop in Los Angeles, Calif.

RiverBeast:
Thanks for the info.
OEM rockers for AMC's are 1.6 ratio, always have been?
Need to find someone who's done the rockers and has found the problems involved, ie; longer rods, mill the stud bosses down, etc.?
Anyone???

guess I got my #'s wrong....sorry...I'll have to ask next time I get to LA. Shouldn't be any mods.... just a bolt on...unless you go radical with the stuff.
FYI-I just put self-aligning 1.52 Magnums on my 'Burb.... no problems at all.

I've been told that it's no problem if you can find rockers that use the original 3/8" studs, but if you want to go to larger 7/16" studs you have to have the heads machined (holes drilled and tapped).
On eBay these are posted for sale constantly:

My understanding is that you have to make custom made guide plates for the pushrods which is a little tricky to do. J20

OK why? are you planning to turn 5000 RPM day in day out? working to build the worlds fastest FSJ? (land speed record or Quartermile?) planning on pulling down tall building in a single bound? All these fancy pansy auto parts that are out there (they do look cool on a parts list.) but you must look at use and see if you really need it for what you use the beast for.
are you having problems with valve lash?
do you have problems cracking/braking rockerarms?
are your push rods getting bent or slipping out of the stock rockerarms?
the most I would go with is a nice set of roller tips. guide plates are great if you turn high RPM or pull massive power out of a motor. but for the most part use the Kiss idea. Keep It simple Stupid. A good solid motor build should be powerful, but nice to drive and start everytime. a good built motor does not need RACE DESIGNED PARTS. SEMI-STOCK for a Street/off road truck is the most you need. If you must go with roller rockers make sure they are the Rebuildable kind. Keep in mind that Even $500 "Chrome go fast pretty parts" wear out in time.

heh... i think someone has my driving habits pegged... tongue.gif ;)
roller rockers'd be kinda cool, actually. i dunno the big differences between the types of lifters. my dad sez hydraulic tappets are self adjusting... but what's that mean? *does the deer in the headlights look*
thanks

HE iz right... they are self adjusting.. they use the oil as a fluid to keep presure on the pushrods constant so that as the cam and lifter slowly grind each other away you still have a contant adjustment at the Valve stem to rocker arm.

Jeez...,
Have ANY of you actually WORKED on an AMC before???
If so, then you'd probably know that unless I have a set of '73 or earlier heads, I have the solid bridged pivot rocker assy that is NON ADJUSTABLE, so there IS no "stud", it's a 5/16-18 bolt that holds the solid bridge down and therefore, no guideplates are needed.
IF any milling of the heads, decking the block, valve job, etc. is done, then the "adjustment" is out the door and the bridges must be shimmed or milled, depending on the pre-load or lack thereof. I've seen too many people just bolt up the pivots, only to bend all their pushrods and wipe out cam lobes and lifters.
So...., this is why I'm going to ADJUSTABLE rockers/guideplates/studs. So I don't have to spend two days setting up the valve train (like I have many times before).
So...., again, is there anyone out there who has ACTUALLY INSTALLED adjustable ROLLER rockers on their AMC???

AMC??? what is an AMC? Sorry, I thought Kaiser was the only one who made the FSJ..LOL
Nope never worked on the AMC motor myself.
I do know that the Pushrods on the AMC are the same as what you get on my Ch*vy motor..
but not much more then that...

I would like to run the quarter in less than twelve while running at 6000rpm with my local 4x4 shop chained to my custom tube bumpers :D

Not me, I'd just like to get away from having to shim or mill for each individual valve!
Looks like I'll be doing the headwork to put the heads to pre-'73 vintage so I can run the stock adjustable rockers (unlike the solid bridged pivot assy that everyone has now).

I have done this type of conversion on my Olds but not on an AMC. You might check around this AMX site:
http://www.amxfiles.com/
or search around thier webring for some info.

If you run the bridged rocker heads then the the rocker pedistals either have to be milled down OR run longer push rods. I believe the Harlan Sharpe website has the info. No, I do not have the address.
