I gave the car a good visual inspection and there are no leaks, nor is the tank on the master cylinder low on fluid. So, does that mean the master cylinder is toast? The brakes for two years have always been a little spongy; I just thought that maybe the Jeep wasn't engineered that great when it came to brakes.

Last year I did a major brake job. Replaced the rear drums, pads, cylinders and rear brake lines from the driver's door down. So that half of the system is new.

So, the question remains. Is it simple enough to just narrow it down to the master cylinder? I guess that's a simple R&R, then bleed the system, right?

Rich, when you say spongy, you mean that the brake pedal keeps going toward the floor when you hold the brakes at even pressure? If so, and if it were mine, I'd replace the master cyl with a new (not reman) name-brand part. Reman cylinders just don't last very long, at least in my experience. When you push the pedal, the fluid has to go somewhere - if it isn't leaking out then it's leaking back to the reservoir or into the brake booster.

Another possibility is air in the system, so you might want to bleed it first.
