What is the name of the seal at the top of the steering gearbox? It is leaking a think, bluish-gray fluid, and I wasn't sure of the name of the seal up there.......anyone know the specific name of this seal?

sector shaft seal if you are talking about the one that the steering shaft goes to. although the autoparts store i went to didn't know the correct term for it and called it an input seal.

That's what they called it at the parts house yesterday, but I wasn't sure, so I didn't order it.....yet....

Can you replace this seal with the box still on the jeep and at the same time replace that rubber disk thing right before the seal? I think I might have slop here also.

SJ, I think you can, although it's a little tight. You'll need to remove your steering shaft.

On my CJ, I ended up having to pull the box (and in rust county, upper midwest
I did not want to try and undo the hoses so I pulled all the way back to the pump)
What ate my seal was the input shaft had some nasty rust, so I polished the shaft
before installing the new seal. Be carefull not to cut up the new seal on the input
shaft spines when sliding it on (I taped the splines before sliding the seal(s) on)

I never would have thought to look for rust down there......eventually, I want to go to a ram hydrosteering setup....

could a bad seal be the cause of sloppy steering? There seems to be play at that point in the box.

I might try some PS Sealer, like CD2 first, just to see if that helps....oh yeah, my fingers are crossed!
