Wouldn't it be sweet if someone made a conversion kit that allowed you to: Butcher off your perfectly good cherokee's top and install a full removable yet weatherproof soft top with zip-in windows like those lucky Chevy Blazer guys.
Anyone ever seen some project like this or heard of anyone sucessfully making it work?

Close. I saw a cherokee that had the top cut off, but the top had a flange welded to it so you could bolt the top back on. It looked like a professional job and was well weatherstripped and the flange was on the inside, so with the top on, you would never know it was detachable.

Chris,

Do you recall how they handled the door frames/windows? I've been thinking about this alot, especially since Bob Barry chopped up that wag on film. It looked SWEET topless!

David Allen's Topless Cherokee (http://www.davidallenracing.com/cherokee.htm)
Check that one out. The second coolest FSJ on the net (next to River Beast). If I remember correctly, there are some pages about the build up too. -Zach

Why not use one of the many specialty tops for blazer?

http://www.specialtytopco.com/blazer.html

Looks like they have the full top, 4runner style and tonneau cover/cab set up for blazer. If the measurements are close, you might be able to graft one of these to a Cherokee? Also they have several other tops if blazer is not the right size.

There is a company that makes Soft tops for 4-runners, Bronco's, Blazers etc. that will custom make a top for whatever you got. I saw it in a recent 4WOR....I'll search around and get the info posted.

From what I remember the top and rear sides of the window jambs on the doors were separated and integrated with the hardtop, so all you saw with the top off was the windshield and vent windows, along with the rollbar. I would imagine that you couldn't put your windows up because 2 supporting sides are gone, but there's no reason to, right? I don't remember how it was mated above the windshield. I saw it over 10 yrs ago while in college.

82wags got the place nailed.....Can-Back....that's it.

However, I would think the only way they could make a custom top for a something unusual....like a topless FSJ.....would be to take it directly to them. Worth a call though ph # (626) 442-0739.

I guess ti goes without saying that if you were to chop your top, you would HAVE TO fabricate a roll cage for it...

...that's nto just for safetys sake, the original roof is a structural component of the truck and if removed, would require the truck to be reinforced. Which means that just any old roll cage wouldn't do the trick, it would need to be custom fabbed to give you back the structure that you lost in the roof...

But you prolly already knew that. :D
