T-18 transmssions really do bolt in to Grand Wagoneers! I've been doing the work at Naval Station Ventura County, where a friend of mine is a Navy Lieutenant. He has access to the automotive hobby shop on base. We removed the tf 727 and np228 last week, and installed the t-18 and dana 20 yesterday afternoon and today. Had a near disaster when the chain holding the trans/t.c. parted while lifting it onto the trans jack, and the shift bracket for the transfer case broke. So I will be looking for one of those. But all the heavy work is done now, including the front axle swap. With the exception of the chain failure, everything went pretty smoothly. The Jeep is home now, and I can finish everything up in my garage. Thanks to everyone who gave me info/suggestions on flywheels, etc.

Nice. I did a similar swap. Replaced my TH400 w/ a T18/D20.

Enjoy!

Regards Geoffyes, and yes, the bellhousing has the same bolt pattern as the v8s.

Gas tank to D20 interferance is a concern on the Quadratrac only wagons?

I had a T-18/NP208 from a mid-80s F150. I forget the overall length, but it was too long for my Wrangler. The factory adapter is almost a foot long IIRC.

Would this setup fit in an FSJ fairly easily? I know the tranny will bolt up no problem and I could leave the tcase bolted together with the tranny. What is the overall clearance before the gas tank is a problem?

Geoff: just get a T18a from behind a i6. The V8 version has a longer input shaft. Glass tankc learance isnt a problem for QT's (but boy is the drive and a bad angle) but on factory manual trans rigs, flexing the pass side rear tire up will make the drive shaft hit a tank bracket without a lift.

Boston: it will work in a wag if the tank is moved back, or replaced with a rear tank. This setup came in 80's J20's, and yes its one LONG setup. It goes into a j-truck with no problems. Wag/cheros need the fuel tank pushed back.
