Okay, sorry for the dumb question but I did do a search and came up empty. There is a small lever on the drivers side floor board next to the transmission hump of my 77 J-10 258 Th 400 Q/T. What exactly is it and what does it do?

I think you might be talking about your low range lever.

Yep... that's your high and low range... in the glovebox you'll find a switch that locks the front and rear together (E drive)... together they make a hell of a combination.

You mean that large gaping hole behind the glovebox door?:D There is no box, just the door and behind dash wiring. So I should be looking for a "switch" somewhere hanging around behind the dash?

There should be a large dial knob with a red/green plate behind it that shows the position of the 4x4. Should have vaccum lines connected to it as well.

That lever is for the ejection seat.
Or the low range. :D

Yeah, knob is a heck of a lot better description than switch... it'll have three vacuum lines running to it... one is a supply from the manifold and the other two go to a hardline behind the engine and then down to the transfer case where they to the vacuum diaghram that switches it between normal drive and Edrive (instead of allowing slippage between the front and rear axles it locks them together).

Maybe that will help you...

Well, since I just found out that someone before me just laid some sheet metal over the rusty floorboards, the ejection seat may be unnecessary. It seems that I may be able to crawl out from the bottom like a WWII tank.
I've got more sheet metal work ahead of me than I realized.:D
