Sounds like the transfer case is about to go, anyone know where I can get my hands on one asap?

Try the for sale or wanted sections. Lots of guys swap to a NP208 and will have their old NP229 sitting around which is what you need. If you want to upgrade you can go with a NP208 but it'll require a rear driveline modification. The 229 will get you back on the road faster though.

Yep it is the transfer case definately making the noise.
It was rebuilt just a year ago by the previouse owner so I was surprised, I geuss the rebuild sucked..

What is the benefit of upgrading to the 208 from the 229?

Kerry: I could be interested, I will be on a road trip for a week though, so I will connect when I return

208 has much simpler internals, stronger, fully manual (no super crappy vacuum actuation), you can run 2wd low front or rear or 2hi front (handy if you break a driveshaft). I ran a 208 for over a year behind my 300hp 360 and 38.5in tires and it was bulletproof.

How can you run 2wd Low front or rear, or 2Hi front, with an NP-208? It's only got one shift lever on the x-case....

Gregory -
Double-check all the vac lines going to your t-case. Whenever one is cracked or broken, it will cause a loss of vacuum and will slip to a neutral spot between 2WD and 4WD. Sounds like a chain grinding in a blender.
Fix the vacuum and all should work fine.

My 229 is making this noise, but only in 2wd. It shifts from 2 to 4 OK, but I put it in 4 lo, and now can't get it out. Could mine be a vacuum hose too, or is my case toast? I was thinking it was toast, because I never seemed to have problems shifting so I didn't think it was a vacuum problem. I will have to check that. Thanks for the hope.

Friends 82 Chero threw the rear driveshaft on dry pavement. Disconnected rear driveshaft....I pushed her into 4wd....drove home. They are stout cases. But they are part time....can't drive it in 4WD on pavement(with the driveshafts in) like you can with a NP229.
