behind the motor mount the block will have the raised numbers 401.

You can try reaching under the mount and feeling the numbers out with your fingertips. I've gotten used to "feeling" 360s. Found a "4" once and got excited, until further groping revealed a 304!

If it's a 401 you should also notice a glow or halo around the rig. :D This will be accompanied by muted harp music and warmth coming from the engine compartment. ;)

Also, I think all 401's came with a 4 bbl carb (I could be wrong here), so if it has a 2bbl then you can save yourself a trip under the rig. I guess that assumes the P/O didnt switch to a 2 bbl at some point, I've seen people do stupider things than that!!

401's lurk in bushes well hidden behind rust, you can see a little steam usually from a blown head gasket, but BEWARE they BITE HARD and when you get near one you can hear it grunting and snorting.

Or you can learn AMC brail and finger the 401 cast into the block like the 15 other reply's said on this one..........LOL

you find 401's at the other end of the rainbow.

They put 'em in IH rigs also, for a short while. Musta be cammed a little better 'cause they show slightly better specs on HP/Torque from what I've seen.

To clarify:

2. and YES..I will want top dollar for my 401. Why shouldn't I? If someone just has to have it, I will sell it for a profit. No shame in that...just the way the system works.

I see that you are an "ASE Master Auto Technician". I'm making the assumption that you use this certification to make a living by charging the going rate for your services. I'm sure in the back of your mind you can justify the $40-50/hr.[or more] shop rate that is demanded of the unknowing. So I ask you...what is the difference between what you are doing, and what I propose to do? Nothing??? Hmmmm... Let me give you a hint. retro - we can debate this forever and get nowhere, so I'd like to first say that it wasn't my intent to single you out and create a wave - it was very simple on my end - to me this is a club and ideally everyone here is here to help each other out - I just plain didn't like what you had to say and still don't - a difference of opinion that will probably never be settled

I regularly give away the same advice I charge for for free here. In your haste you forgot one important thing - I also have a degree in business management and if you have ever studied it then you would know that a shop's rate is determined by its rent, utilities, wages paid to employees, worker's comp insurance not to mention the fact of recovering the costs on major shop equipment like $3800 brakes lathes, $2800 scan tools, $1800 for lifts. I myself personally have over $50k invested in hand tools and specialty tools that would not be considered "shop tools", and we at our shop regularly give free advice, free diagnostics, free brake inspection, etc, etc. This $50per hour rate is just not arbritrarily grabbed from the air as you would make it out to be.

So yea I do go to work to make money and do live in a capitalist society, but those are not my reasons for coming here whatsoever.

There ain't no free lunch in this worldoh but there is I as of right now have someone from another message board I frequent sending me parts for another car I have for free - he even paid for the shipping and refuses to let me pay him for it. His only request was that if I was in a position to help someone else that I would do it. there are good people out there just becoming extremely more difficult to find these days.

"The 401 myth lives on"

I don't think these guys would last long over at the AMC racing forums, somebody would call out to a race and that would be the end of their whining about what the AMC isn't.
Read up on the Great White, fantasy or just a big three eating machine?

Does it have to go this way every time someone talks or asks a reasonable question about a 401?
All of a sudden every AMC hating fool has to get in here and start chipping with their lil ol whine stories and big three baloney. tongue.gif

Personally i wish they still made the 401 or if AMC made a big block, they sued some good technology and some bad... But all in all I will always favor the AMC higher displacement V8's because of the power bands and where they develope the peak power.. Do you really have a block laying around?

Do you suppose 192mph w/o blower, 217mph blown is myth, or just the fantasy that there is a Big three anything that will do 192 w/o a blower?

I really don't get all the attitude on this site, it is a Jeep site... maybe there's just a huge jealousy that they can't get more then $50 for their blocks.

It's just that way with the 401, some people can't stay on topic and have to start bashing.

If you didn't catch it in my earlier post there is a 401 in the for sale column that's here in Houston if that's not too far. I thought it was pricey, but he has some work into it and might dicker.

I can understand why my words didn't sit well with you. It is very obvious that our viewpoints on the subject of the IFSJA club "benefits" are different. Ideally, everyone would give parts and help away gratis..but again..that isn't the real world. No harm..no foul. I too try to help members when I have the opportunity..even giving parts away and shipping them at my expense...as you have done. As a matter of fact, I just shipped a 360 cam/lifters to a member that was in dire need of one. I hope he puts it to good use. smile.gif

Elliot...I really don't understand your position on this whole subject. To put it mildly, you remind me of an AMC cheerleader that is out to ram the 401 [or any other AMC engine] down our throats. From your viewpoint, if it isn't an AMC it isn't worthy of consideration for use in a Jeep. Yeah..I take pot shots at the 401, but if you read my posts I would hope that you notice that they are mostly in good humor. I try to make it clear that it is my opinion. Anyway...all I'm trying to say is lighten up some. Geeezzz...your AMC only tirade is getting REAL old. :/

It's the ever present drone man. Like when you try to have a discussion about a 360 or 401 and the "haters" come out to mock.
I don't think the AMC fans do that, at least I haven't and haven't seen it when there's a post about GM, Mopar, or Ford and Jeep. Think about it, seriously.... it gets old real fast. We can rip you for some lame aspect of whatever else you power your Jeep with, but that hasn't been our style. Then when it happens, all of a sudden in one single thread people get real uncomfortable. Well if you have a 360 or 401 and like it then you really don't like all the BS droning about perceived inherent and AMC specific shortcomings being spoused by a group of obvious AMC "haters".

Here we are again on another 401 thread with people complaining about how we stand up for AMC. Does this really make any sense?

Those who like the AMC engines aren't here to ram AMC down your throat, if you notice the thread you are referencing (and the thread you're on now) was about AMC and then somehow the Big Block baloney got involved as something superior to AMC. It's not, clearly not, but there were a bunch of guys trying to steer the topic off of AMC into an abyss of baloney.

For all those offended about Jeepers liking the AMC engines... you might want to just skip the threads rather then enter and mock and then complain about how long you had to engage in the thread or what the content was. For all the crap we all spewed some interesting things came up even with the GM cheerleaders in the conversation and maybe because of them.

It was nice to see some dynos run too, I like facts.
