Allright, I have a 1984 j10 and I had the transmission and transfercase rebuilt about 2-3 months ago everything worked perfectly untill yesterday when I went mudding and I lost my drive and reverse gears. This is on a torque flite 727 with a np229 t-case could you guys give me some insite to what might be the problem? need to get this fixed cause this is my DD and help is much apriciated!
I do beleave the cause of the problem is 5 feet of water that I was stuck in for about 20min untill I could find a place to winch from! But the fun was worth trouble hahaha

Does this condition change if you (try) to shift the transfer case from 2WD to 4WD (or the other way around)?

no it stays the same, But I think it mite be the rear belt that controlls reverse and the D postions because 1st and 2nd work like their is no problem at all but when I put it in drive only first gear will work and it will not shift to the higher gears. Is it very hard to change out the rear belt?

OK, you've ruled out the transfer case.
On to the transmission: These are VERY tough transmissions. Hard to kill one. Really.
How's your fluid level? Stupid question, I know, but a VERY low fluid level can sometimes allow certain gears positions to work and not others.

Had this problem with my '89 when I first bought it. It was the "sprag clutch" in the tranny. That's what they told me. Took a rebuild to fix it, other option is to just find a good used one and put it in. That's my $.02 worth from having been there.
Should be able to find a good tranny for lots less than a rebuild. Upside replacement should be way cheaper, upside rebuilt should be guarenteed a long life.

I'd change the fluid... if you were truly in "five feet" of water and any got in the tranny it could have pushed the fluid out and also mixed with it. Hey, it's worth the try...

I missed the "5 feet of water part". Yup. Change that fluid ASAP. Water ingestion would surely void a warranty!

My vote is the sprag, get the water out and clean the truck. the sprag can't stand up to much rocking( D to R + heavy throttle).

do a fluid change and take it back to the tranny shop!:hide:
oh and dont mention the water incident

I had something similar happen to me years ago. I wasn't in 5 ft, more like 3 ft., but by the time I got pulled out the front pump was broken and leaking. Granted I wasn't on a fresh rebuild, but it would be something to look at.
Is your 727 leaking any oil from the bell housing at all?

If the sprag went it would only allow reverse and manual low. They both work off of the drum and don't rely on the sprag. That is how my old J10 was when I got it, it would move in reverse and manual low but not in drive, the sprag was blown apart and replaced by a $30 part and dinner for my trans guy buddy and his wife!

You are absolutely right. Made me dust off the memory cells on this one. When mine went south, I was able to move the truck but only in reverse and low. Would not move in "D" or 2nd. Thanks for the refresher.

you have an adjustment two adjustments on the trans. Under the trans cover. So when you change the fluid. its in the cheapo service manuals i think one is for first and reverse. follow the adjustment.
