I am looking at buying a 1987 GW with a vacuum operated snow plow and
was wondering if anyone has used or been around one to tell me about it. I went to test drive the GW it is in good shape and the plow works good I guess. Goes up and down. You have to swivel it by had to turn its positions. Or should I stay away from this setup? I just need it for my driveway. A hundred yards of plowing or so.

They work fine if you are not in a hurry.

As I recall:

Jeep strongly advised against putting snowplows on GWs. I think they felt that the frame wasn't strong enough to handle the impact---or something like that.
I'd be interested to know what the experience here has been on this.

Not sure where you heard that, but I have had quite a few Wags Cheros and J Trucks with plows on them. Almost all the Wags up here are strictly plow duty rigs. I have never seen anything go wrong due to frame issues.

LOL You want to see what? A Wagoneer with a Plow on it, or you want to see a Vac Lift Plow? :D

Jeep actually had factory/dealer installed plow packages ie: Snow Boss like the one in a recent post for a Chero on ebay. The frames for wags and J trucks were essentially the same.

I've talked with several long time AMC/Jeep mechanics who told me the same thing. In the same breath they also said it was to 'push J-Truck sales' and so that people wouldn't think of the GW's as more of a work horse than a luxury cruiser. Basically they said think of an Escalade with a plow. I don't get it.

I've seen the frames under both my Wag and my I-Bird. If the I-bird was 4WD I'd put a plow setup on it in a hearbeat. At the same time I wouldn't put one on the wag at the point of a gun.

But I care about the Wag a lot more than I do the cornbinder, to be quite honest. But, still, the 'binder has it on the Wag in frame gauge and integrity.... Just thought I would mention this.... :D

Besides--I hate operating a plow truck; things tend to get broken a lot--whether you know what you are doing--or you are careful--or not.... :banghead:

Well both of course! It's like 53* here and too cold for me to go out and work on mine, so I want to see what everyone else is doing.
It was my "silly" way of wanting to see the one he's discribing. Any of us would have had our cameras, even if we weren't going to buy it.

LOL:thumbsup:

Not to Hyjack but I've had a 7.5 foot western plow on my 88 waggy for years with any problems. I never had a problem with any part of the frame and I take on the deep stuff. I made my plow mount and it is a little different than the normal style, maybe that's why I haven't had any problems. Here's some pics of the mount....

All I had was my camera phone with me. I am still kicking around on buying it. I need a plow and something big for the family when they come and visit in March. At the moment I have my J-10 in the shop getting an extreme makeover which will cost more than I paid for the truck.
