Just got one of two (hey I like spares of electrical) NOS glovebox clocks.

In the background, you'll see Gambler's glovebox door that I need to finish drilling hole thru for clock to pass. Hole's gotta be pretty exact and the hole is on an angle, but I've located other doors if I mess up.

Last picture is Elliotts townside bumper that I've been installing brake controller plug and de-buring.

I've read instructions and pretty straight forward.
What's botherin me is the clock has no cup over backside.
Going to look kind of funky with door open to see back of clock and wiring.

Anyone got one of these clocks that was factory installed?

Instructions don't mention a cup or protector so guess its another Kaiser goof.

Right now I can't think of anyway to remedy, any ideas?

at least you have a spare door to try it on. I think I'd use a jewelers handsaw on that..

I pulled one from a rig a while back and was suprised by the fact there was no cover or cup on the back. Definitely odd, but it appeared to be stock.

I've thought about browsing the container aisle at the store, looking for a round plastic container to cut down to fit over the u retainer clip and snugged down when the stud is tightened to the clip. But I also been too scared to hook mine up after smoking so many dash clocks.

Anyone have any ideas of how to buffer the clock circuit so the wires don't get smoked when the voltage in the loop varies? I thought about a capacitor or running the clock off a battery and have the battery wired to charge through some kind of isolation, but haven't worked out the details.

Good luck and I wish my junk was that nice!

By the way, I have a 60's glove box door in my 78 truck, currently sporting the plastic Jeep logo, one I'll drop the clock in place.

Can you make something out of thin wall PVC or cardboard tubing.

Draw it up I can make it in my shop

"But I also been too scared to hook mine up after smoking so many dash clocks."

Never thought about smokin clock's :o

So the voltage fluctuating or spiking burn these things up with a frequency?

I know a guy that repairs clocks & radio's- Ken Parkaman.

The CJ clocks are held on with similar U shaped bracket.
CJ Tach's are held on with a plastic cup but its pretty large-ish.

In my J-10, I have had two of the older style analog clocks burnout, one upon install, one after the battery was drawn down. Somewhere in the wiring I have a drain I have not been able to track down, when the voltage gets low, various parts (relays etc) respond a little differently and I think a voltage drop/amperage surge toasted the one.

With circuits in good order and good wires, it should perform as intended, but I wanted to share some of my troubles. I need to hook mine up to a power supply and see if it keeps time.

When I pulled it, I was suprised to say the least at no cover over the door opening in the glove box and the way the factory wiring just ran from in the box to the clock. I assumed it would have run through the door and made some attemept to be hidden, but not so much at all.

Good luck,

Daniel

I dug thru my CJ stash last night and found a NOS CJ tach and cup.

The CJ cup fits nice, cup is just going to need a little air saw trimming.

The clock has a terminal on back that Lines up perfect for a long nut.
A plastic 10-24 machine screw from cup to that will hold in place and protect the clock and hide the wiring.

I've found that electrical items can handle too much voltage better than dragging with low voltage, so yea a low battery will cause problems.
