Ok here isthe trick question for those guys or gals thet have the 401 in there rigs. What is if any the difference in the exterior of the 401 vs. the 360.

Here is where I am going, I will be in the shopping need for a motor in the not so distant future. I was wondering if the dweebs working the smog check station would really know if that pretty smooth running motor was a 360 or a 401 by the visual identification. The 401 was not even an option in the 84 year so when it comes up on the screen there is only the 360/258 choices.

Sso if there is any thoughts on this pleasse feel free. I would really like the longer stroke motor of the 401, or maybee a .030 over 360 that should put it around a 390 or something

Thanx for your thoughts.

The only external indicator would be the "401" cast in the side of the block near the motor-mounts. If you're afraid they'll scrape off the grime and grunge and look under your truck with a flashlight (it IS hard to see), a die-grinder can remove that "casting-flash" in a matter of minutes.

I seriously doubt it would even occur to them to see if it was a 401; I'd even doubt whether they would know what a 401 is!

As for a +.030" 360, it would probably spec out to about 367cid, not 390.

There are only two ways I know of that your 401 could be identified as such. All AMC engines blocks have the displacement cast into the side of the block, on the left side, I think. This casting number (401, 360, 304) is difficult to find even when you know it's there due to dirt and grime buildup and the fact that it is hidden by the exhaust manifold and various other external components. The engine size might also be traceable by the cylinder head casting code, but again, this is next to impossible to see and I'm betting that nobody is going to go to the trouble! They wouldn't have any reason to do so because the information that they use for vehicle identification will be the VIN or the emissions info on the tag on the front cowl, and these would indicate that you have a 360. Just make sure that you have all the emission control pieces and parts that were originally on the 360 in place on the engine so you can pass the visual inspection. Hope this puts you at ease!

You could really confuse the issue by putting the engine tag from the right valve cover from the 360 on the 401.

You might have a problem if they happen to notice that 4bbl carb sitting on top. They stopped putting them on 360s long before '84.

AS for the 4 bbl carb just use the old 2 bbl intake till you get it passed then store it for the next two years. Swapping manifolds is pretty easy and quick.
And it's too hard to find the engine number when you ARE looking for it. No way they will.
Is the timing different on the 401 than the 360? Timing affects emmisions.

I have been looking for a good 401 engine myself.

Would the factory 2150 carb starve the 401 engine?

I like the 2150 for it's low rpm qualities and it would definitely be easier to pass the visual smog test.

When International Harvester used the 401's as thier V400 in light duty trucks they used the 2150. I think that i would find one off a Ford 400m motor as these would be jetted real close to the 401.

the intake manifold, carb, etc will be noticeably different especially if they have to put in "2 bbl" on the machine. your vac lines and CTO/EGR/PCV junk may also be different! 78 was the last year model that was available w/401s, relatively few vacuum lines cluttered the engine compartment then. If the technician is experianced he may notice the missing junk and or other small details. If you fail what will they do to you? Is it worth it?

The smog equipment could readily be transferred over, since the holes that the CTO's and the vacuum-lines plug into are on both manifolds. I don't even think anyone would think to check if the carb had two or four barrels, if it was shrouded in enough vacuum-line and emissions-equipment.
