I think my starter solinoid went out, so to make sure I was going to use the solinoid off my 78 CJ-7 (401). It is the same solinoid right?

What would be different? It has the same starter.

i see now that you put a 401 in your 88 right.in that case it should.a stock 88 has a diffrent setup in it with a mitsu.starter with the solinoid built in and a relay on the fender.

I think it could work, (Have to get creative with
the wiring) but not a direct drop in by any means.

The starter was changed halfway through the year to the mitsu setup. My Jeep was made before that.

OK my 88 has the mitsu, setup, but if yours pre
that, then they are still different but not by
much, unless the CJ had an Auto trany.
The ford solinoid came in two flavors, one with
auto (or with manual and clutch depressed switch) and one with normal maual trans.
The differance is the auto one has an extra terminal
that goes to the neutral saftey switch, which is
grounded when in park/neutral the other solinoid
has this internaly grounded, so it will allways
ingage when power is allied to the crank terminal.

(Oh there is other variations that
don't have the coil resistor bypass terminal)

But they could all be made to work in a crunch,
if you are not worried about the factory
saftey interlocks, or concerned about getting
good spark while cranking.

I put a solinoid off an 85 (it was new from O'reilly's, they didn't list one for an 88)and it wouldn't crank over. The problem I had with the old one is it would try to start even with the key off (not fun) I changed the ignition switch and it did the same thing. The CJ was a stick, now it's manual and I didn't have to change the solinoid.

85 one should be good to go, it should have the
big Batt lugs, two smaller bolt posts, and a tit
terminal on the back opposit the small bolt terminals.

OK I assume you have the big jobs hooked up right,
the two small bolt posts are: coil resistor bypass
and crank (from igntion switch). The tit terminal
is the neutral safty terminal. If you have power to
the right small bolt terminal and ground on the tit term.
the solinoid should engage.

If worse comes to worse you can bypass it. Mine went (85 GW) and left me stranded so I took the negative wire(Green) and wored it to the coil and I jumped a positive straight off the terminal on the battery and it works great.

A four terminal Ford relay will replace a three terminal relay. You simply do not connect anything to the fourth terminal. Most auto parts stores only sell the four terminal unit to cover both applications.

Ok, I put the solinoid off the CJ-7 into the Wagon. After getting the right wires on the right bolts, it finally cranked over, but I am getting no power to the coil. The solinoid that was taken off did not thave the tit on the bottom. So now why wouldn't I get power to the coil?

I tinkered with it Friday after work, and for some reason it started. Boy was I suprised, it's finally running after setting for a couple months. Now I just have to fix a few things so I can sell it.

How much 4?

I'm going to ask $2500. It has the stock wheels with 33" BFG AT's now. I sold the Eagles and BFG MT's to my brother.
