Hi all,

How the hell do I remove the rear inner axle seal on my 88 GW w/ a Dana 44?

The Haynes manual says to use a slide hammer with external jaws. I have a slide hammer, but it is not NEARLY long enough to reach the inner seal. Not to mention the fact that I can't even fit the jaws of the slide hammer into the axle tube.

The only thing I can think of (aside from looking for an expensive slide hammer that I'll hardley use) is pulling the differential and trying to access the seal from inside the pumkin.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Haynes is giving you directions for the inner outer seal (adjecent to the wheel-bearing), which your '88 doesn't have.

I'm not sure the D44 would have the inner inner seal (adjacent to the carrier bearings), since it relied on splash lubrication from the gear oil to lube the wheel bearings. Such a seal requires removal of the carrier for replacement, as it comes out through the pumpkin.

Again, though they used them up front, I don't think they used those in the back. I could be wrong on this one, though.

the older 44 does have a seal next to the wheel bearing to keep gear oil out of the bearing, which is packed with grease. there is no inner seal(next to carrier bearing) in the rear 44 like there is in the front.

the 88 44 doesnt have this seal?wheel bearings are lubed with gear oil? hmmm.interesting...

Yeah, they did away with the inner seal in '86, I believe. No provision for the inner seal either. I figured this one out the first time I changed the bearings in my '88.
