It's a runner that has sat for 3 yrs. I can't get under it to verify the 401 cast into the block, but it does have the "Z" code & the air cleaner still has a sticker on it w/ some writing pertaining to the 401. But, the guy says it's a real dog (cold blooded also). He thinks it's because of the q-trac. Any truth to this? I also noticed the smog pump belt was missing if this would make a diff. Will a cam wake these things up? I'm used to a 455 & don't want a "dog". I think I can get this for $400 and would likely stick my D60 dually setup under it rather than my glad as the family has outgrew it. thanks, 68 glad

In good shape a 401 isn't a dog but it's not a 455 either. May just be a tired worn out motor, worn tcase, badly in need of a tune up? Anything is possible in a 30 year old car with unknown maint history. If the body isn't rusted or smashed and it has a rebuildable 401 it's well worth $400.

Diddo on that. I had a tired 401 that "ticked" and it still had more power than a good running 360. I have a 455 BB in my 74 truck and I love the low end grunt it has over the 401. Make sure you check the casting numbers.
