I found one for sale and the guy wants $1000 for it. The work is already done and I am going to need a tow rig in the near future for a 1500 mile move. I am pretty sure it has the original drivetrain: th400, QT 44's front and rear. The original owner swapped in the big block so he could tow his airstream a little easier. Will this engine just eat up the drivetrain or am I in the clear. What sort of mileage can I expect? It is a carb'd big block. thanks
Joe

wheelbase is a bit short for towing anything big. that 454 will decrease the life of the q/t chain i'm sure.

I would go for it if the work is already done then once you get to were you are going have the T-Case overhauled or get it done before you go.I myself would look for a 400 turbo with a 205 or 208 transfer and and ten make the move.the rest of the running gear will make it if you feal comfortable with it.If the T-case doesnt have alot of slop in it and the running gear is fairly tight Id go for it the 454 is worth the thousand on its own.Good luck.Oh and better throw in some new springs or someair assist in the rear to tow with it.

The Quadra-trac can handle the 454. It won't handle any hole shots but then again any engine hole shots will destroy a Quadra-trac.

It is a very nice case for automatic transmissions.

I'm sure the old racing J trucks(Baja) had a more powerful motor than a stock 454 in them.

<edit> To answer your question above... YES

Does anyone already run this type of setup?

There are a handful of folks running 454's, and they seem to be quite happy with them. As long as it's set up properly and not rigged together, it's a good engine for the heavy FSJ's.

Btw, to answer the question "Do I really need a 77 widetrack with a 454? "

The answer is "WELL, DUH!" ;)

Thats like asking if I really need my Super Redhawk (44 mag with a 9" barrel). And for mileage, yes you can expect to get some.

NEED has NOTHING to do with it. If you want it, buy it. Forget about any justification for it. You want it, get it. Simple.
