Max weight on stock 84 wag roof rack?

Anyone know the max weight for a stock 84 Grand Wagoneer roof rack?

Any tricks for reinforcing it so I can put a spare up there?

I'd say go with a set of the brackets that Tadsal makes. The stock rack is just held on with well nuts. They are marginal at best when new. You have to drop the headliner to install Tad's brackets, but they will add a lot add support to your rack. Do a search for Tad Racks and you can most likely find pics on how they tie tthe stock rack into structural parts of the upper body.

We carry our spares on our stock roof racks. We just make sure they are strapped down good. Never had a problem. We had several hundred pounds (2 bumpers, mounting brackets, misc jeep parts, camping gear, clothes, etc) on my rack for the Arizona trip we took in November. Traversed hundreds of miles on highway and off road. No sweat. As long as your rack and mounts are in good shape you'll be fine for a spare.

I highly recommend Tad's rack brackets (that just sounds naughty :D)! I got a set for xmas and can't wait to get them in. It'll make a HUGE difference!
