View Full Version : My locks suck!!

Well, it started with the passenger side, and yesterday the drivers side did it. There is like no spring tension in the locks. If I turn the key to unlock the door, they don't pop all the way up. They just "kinda" go up, and I I have to keep the key turned to open the door. If I pull the knob up, it slides back down really easily. Something isn't making it stay up. Anybody know how to fix this?

The first thing I'd do is pull the door panels and lube up all the linkage pivot points. Dust sure makes things work hard. Sounds like the springs in the latch have broken. Mine did on the passenger side. It is a litle pivot spring. pretty flimsy. I've read that you can make new ones. I rigged a spring to the linkage to hold up the locks. not pretty but it works.

Well, I have already been in there with lubricant. That shouldn't be the problem, and it doesn't really have anything to do with moving hard. It just hardley moves at all when I turn the key. It's like it doesn't "catch" anything to lift the knob. ??????? any ideas?

treadted.....it is very easy to pull the lock cylinder out...open the door and look in the door jamb directly in line with the cylinder lock, right next to the door skin you will see the end of a clip(originally it was behind a small piece of weatherseal, you may have to remove w-seal first) using a screwdriver pry this piece out, lock cylinder will come right out! you will then be able to isolate your problem......

Smae things wrong with my drivers side door. It's definately the spring in the latch mechanism.

Check THIS out!

On my passenger door, the lock button doesn't really do anything. I mean, up or down I can still open the door from the outside. In fact, using the key to lock the door is only effective about 80% of the time. The reason this is a problem is because I've had the door open on my when I'm driving, normally when I'm turning left. I've learned to push the inside door handle all the way back down--there's some kind of recoil spring in there that isn't doing its job. How to fix this?

Well, I got in there and checked everything out with my locks. It is the springs. They are broken, snapped in half. Is it possible to get new ones? Or is there some way to rig something up to make it work again?

Same story here.. Last night was the first "real" winter night with snow and real freezing cold, the ground is just barly starting to freeze and I laugh at all the idiots that are already plowing gravel driveways and tearing up peoples property needlessly. Anyhoo, I barely got into my GW cause the locks were frozen up. The pass side finally worked after some doin.. not very encouraging, so Im gonna get in there real soon and spray water displacing lube everywhere..

Hey Treadted2, I'm having a local family run Jeep shop looking for those spring replacements right now. They haven't had any luck finding them yet, but if they do i'll tell ya where they got em from.

Treadted, I have a solution that is about 80% effective. I took out the plastic trim ring that goes in the hole of the lock knob. I then used a rubber gromet that fit the hole of the door, used a drill to ream out the center hole the lock knob would go up and down in. With the friction of the rubber on the knob it was tight so I lubed it a bit and now the knob moves up and down with just enough friction to hold the knob from falling down. This is only a quick fix until I can locate the proper springs to repair it.

My doorlock worked very well. One day I had the panel off and thought a little lube wouldn't harm. Well it did! Since then if I slam the door, the button goes down. I found myself already twice outside the car had to go some place to borrow a piece of steel wire to open up. Can imagine it happen to my wife one day with the engine still running. I'll get ###$$%! Have to do something about it very soon.
