Here is what happened. I was driving about 25 mph when I heard a pop. I let off the pedal and it sounded like something was rubbing my tire. Got out...saw nothing. Limped home and as I was pulling it up into the garage it popped again and the noise stopped. Backed it out and drove for a block and pop, the same thing. I went into neutral and the pitch changed only with the speed of the vehicle not the revs of the engine. Checked my tranny fluid and it was about 3/4 quart low. Replaced it and the noise stopped on the next test run. Has anyone had this problem? Could it be the transfer case? I know the transmission fluid has nothing to do with the transfer but man it has got me worried. This is my daily driver. It is 1979 W/T 360, TH400 quadratrac.

Hmmm... You've got a: 1979 Cherokee S Wide Track, 360, TH400, completly stock. I had a problem with popping from the front. I changed the Us out, and it turned out to be the QTrac chain... But filling your tranny up wouldn't effect the Q-chain...

Let me try to explain it a little better. When it pops, it sounds like a nice set of knobbies running on pavement. It continues to make this sound until it pops again. The sound is coming from underneath my seat not the front of the truck. Could it be my chain in the t-case?

My transfer case chain made a distinct "POP" then when I was starting and going (at a light) a quick "POP POP POP POP" But if I was light on the gas, it wouldn't do it. It was because the chain was stretching out and jumping teeth...

And it was VERY easy to replace, cost my 140 bucks from Tellico4x4, and a friend helped out.
