I am currently replacing the carpet in my GW and noticed the cargo panels are in pretty bad shape. Could I go to Home Depot/ Lowes and buy a 4'x8' sheet of hardboard and cut out my own? Has anyone done this?

Yes, I remember there being a thread back when about somebody doing wood paneled ones. See if ya can't search for the thread as it had some good pics and info.
Alternatively, a member named a1500ram makes nice reproduction FSJ interior panels and usually has a few up on eBay.

It would be fairly easy to do. I'd rate it 2 bananas. Maybe 3 bananas if power tools are involved such as a bandsaw or electric jigsaw.
If your existing panels are intact, you can make a template to give you the curve around the wheelwheel. The other dimensions are simple straight lines.

Some people also use Reinforced Fiberglass Panel for this kind of stuff too. Its not prone to rotting if damp

Yeah I made rear MDF panels for my cherokee so I could mount a 12" sub in the pass side, and an amp on the drivers side. Worked good. Rattles some, but with some forethought and good fasteners wouldnt be a big deal.

I made some out of door skin awhile back.

I'm making mine out of steel.
Somebody here awhile back did the cargo area with what looked like wood flooring strips. I'm not a big wood fan inside or outside of a vehicle but it did look pretty cool.

I made mine out of some 1/2 inch birch plywood, turned out great with 3 coats of minwax sealer and some fine grit sanding befor last coat

also made the rest of the panels all the way through with this stuff, it gets wet every time i drive it and they havent even hinted at rotting

I've always been able to find a cherokee with the metal panels in the rear on previous wags. they're pretty sturdy and look good.
