I already put in a rebuilt power steering pump. I rebuilt the steering box last night. Both hoses have been replaced. Problem still exists.

The problem is that when you are sitting still and trying to turn it is like you have no power steering untill you hit the gas. I guess this ups the pressure in the pump to work.

I am running 33 inch tires but that shouldn't cause all this problem? Anyone had any similar problems?

i would say your pump is not suplieing enough press. at idle.
btw where did you get the kit and what was in it?
oh yea how much was it?

The kit came from Autozone for 32 dollars. It had a lot of o-rings, teflonring seals, bearings and other seals. It was not fun to do. How would you be able to up the pressure? Maybe I should put the old wheels and tires on to see if the problem still exists. It was working fine with the smaller tires. Thanks for the suggestion. I wiil be back in a few hours. Wife has a doctor appt. I would like to finish this tonight.

well i have seen some post to take out slop... rockjeep44 uses ATF in his pump suppose to work better.. you might wanna try that if you can' t find anything else...

Are all your pulley sizes stock? If so, maybe you can get a smaller one for the pump so it works a little harder at idle.

Most of our ps pumps call for ATF, so go with donovan, and throw in the tranny fluid. First check the belt tension. Thebelt could just be slipping at idle, and only really kick in at higher rpms.

Maybe you should just swap me the whole steering setup. I have WAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY to much power assist. No road feel at all.

Does the engine lope when you try to turn the wheel?

Good luck,

Daniel

I'm going to try to get a smaller pulley and see if that helps. It would be a lot easier to change the pulley than another pump or box.

GaWag,

The part about it being an existing problem confuses me a bit, but if not for that, it sounds to me like there is air in the system. Maybe you did already, but did you bleed the system? With the engine OFF, the cap off the P/S pump, and the front axle jacked up (for ease), turn the wheels lock to lock both sides several times.

If you have air in the system, often times it will seem like the pump will all of a sudden "jolt" or "kick in" seconds after trying to turn. Revving the engine would help this.

Just a note, from what I understand, running the engine and turning lock to lock will NOT bleed the system.

Don't know how much it will help, but I read in my Chevy manual that, with the reservoir full, turning the pulley counter-normal rotation will bleed the system.

Don't know if Jeeps use the Saginaw pump, but if it is, aren't the pumps interchangable? I found out the hard way that reservoirs are not.

Hey Daniel, let me in on your secret. I had plenty of power assist in the Chief when it was on 31s, but I think it's going to have trouble turning the 42s! I would love more steering power. I'll have to find out who was going to do a $100 hydraulic ram assist set up and find out how well worked.

Steve, I've heard that some power steering pump rebuilds can be marginal. If you can't fix the problem with all these suggestions, maybe try to get another. Are you running hydroboost brakes or anything else that would require power from the pump? How did it do when you put the stock tires back on?

Will I did a nice little writeup for some guys on my cheap as h3LL hydraulic assist setup. Search for it. I can't remember if it was in technical or general. Shouldn't be hard to find, but if you can't find it lemme know I'll scrape it up. Later

Andrew, How about response on the street? I know if you use a smaller Diameter piston/rod the quicker it is but how much slower and more dangerous is it on the street?

Andrew, thanks very much for the info. It's very helpful to be able to talk to someone who's done all this before. When it's closer to March and I'm getting ready to work on the Jeep when I'm back in town, I'll email you to get a couple more details. I'm still working on getting all my drivetrain parts lined up for March so I can wrench non stop for 4 days before Tellico and hope that it's driveable.
