Does anyone know if an 83 wag has the floor access panal? My gauge has been acting up.It will work properly than stop and drop to E and maybe start again. Now it has went to E and does not move.I would say it could be the ground.I'm going to try and look at it tonight after my wife gets home.
I must tell you folks all thanks.I have made severial repairs to my wag with the info I have gained from this site.I've purchased parts from the classifieds from other members and saved a few bucks. All in all, friends think I'm nuts putting all of the money I have invested in my wagoneer.I just love the darn thing. The way the ride and handle, the classic style.I've repainted it,installed new woodgrain, replaced bodyside moldings, tail light housing(thanks crazy jeepman)complete carpet, new long block, rotors and brakes, rebuilt the distributor, replaced all of the ignition parts, new radiator and heater core, hoses.I still want to upgrade to a four V carb and intake, maybe a TFI conversion, replace the springs. They were right when they said"just empty every pocket"but atleat I can drive it everyday if I want too.My 67 mustang only gets to see the road a few days a year.Even with the cash spent it is still better than a $400 car payment.

My '80 Cherokee had the panel, so yours should, too.

My wag did have the access panal.I believe I should have power to the sending unit all of the time,I'm not showing anything with a test light. There are two wires, the larger round plug and a smaller rectangle plug.Is one of them a ground strap to the frame.I see no other wires comming from the sending unit. You can't see much other than the sending unit.I tried to ground them with the key on and nothing happened, but if there is no power nothing would happen. Is there any other connections other than at the gauge.I'm going to drop the skid plate so I can trace the wires.

Sending unit is like a potentiometer. When full the resistance between the round plug and ground should be around 110 ohms. When empty it should be a few ohms. There are a few write up in Tech Library under fuel systems.

The problem has been fixed.I had a new long block installed a few months back.It appears the mechanic snapped the tabs off of the wireing harness at the fire wall.It was lose enough to break the curcuit on the sending unit and my back up lights.I new the back up light had not worked since I got it back, but I had not had time to look at them.I did not connect the two problems. The gas gauge worked for a week after I had gotten the wag back.Atleast it was a cheap fix,and only took a couple hours to find.
