Found this for cheap, $650, and am considering it.:fsj: :drivin: Opinions on the 6 cyl. hurricane motor? A 65 have the D27/44, d20 T/C? Waiting on more info from the owner.

a 65 won't have the Hurricane, it will have teh OHC 230 6cyl. A good motor, but parts can be hard to come by. If it's a late 65 it may have a 327 or 232.

It could be had with either the Dana 20 or Dana 21 (single speed) tcase.

Auto would be either the BW AS-8F or the Th400 (again, if it's a late 65).

No opinion on it, other than the old 6 banger is not a freeway cruiser. TimK has one in Portland for a few bucks more and a little newer, 360,727,208, with 3.31's

My 64 J200 HD has the 230 OHC Tornado 6 cyl. seems happy hauling the PU truck at 60-65 mph, but don't think it'd be really comfortable at those speeds or more for extended time on freeways. It's not a real powerful high reving engine.
But it IS an interesting engine. If I recall correctly not only did it have the OHC but it was also a Hemi! Biggest issue though is that they are hard to get parts for except from salvage, (pretty much through members here). If you had a breakdown on the road you'd probably be SOL in terms of getting repairs. If you do a search on "tornado" there should be a bunch of info. If you are considering it for off-roading those earlier suspensions have some issues that you'd have to factor in as well

If it were my decision, I'd consider it if the body/frame etc is good but not for a daily driver or for long trips out of my local area, unless I was willing to re-power (my plan for my J-200). If I wanted to keep it as is, I'd look for another engine and completely rebuild it and install it and then build up a small supply of spare parts

Yeah, that OHC "Tornado" engine was OK for the times, as they were a lot easier going then. Too nervous to drive at highway speeds these days. I knew of one that beat itself to death internally because the owner didn't respect the redline.

Interesting specimen, but obviously putzed with, if the bucket seats are any indicator. And--while it looks clean and straight--for some gut reason the appearance of the finish has my fingers itching for a refrigerator magnet to caress the lower reaches with....

Body swap it on a 360 powered frame and driveline  Problems (many) solved.

You can get engine parts including complete rebuild kits for the 230 from Kanter's but they're expensive. NAPA will have the hyd brake and hyd clutch parts.
Depends on your goals and finances I guess. For a resto project it looks like a pretty good start. If you're looking for a daily driver you'll probably need to go through the motor, suspension and steering at least. Plan on dumping a couple of grand into it anyway.
If you plan on swapping axles and drive train anyway then Gamblers suggestion of dropping the body on a later chassis would probably be best.

Dave is right, definately a repaint, looks like it was red/orange before, flaking/chipping above taillight.

..and white originally, judging by the looks of the interior metal surfaces.

It does look pretty solid from this photo.

I drive my '63 J200 quite abit, but like others have said, the 230 is not a high-rever and I usually keep it below 60 on the freeway. I've put about 10,000 miles on it in the last 5 years, but usually just on casual trips. Manual brakes, three on the tree, hydraulic clutch, sloppy manual steering all add up to making a vehicle that is "work" to drive.

Buy it! Since when does an FSJ guy worry about vehicle reliability BEFORE he buys it! Seriously, a very cool truck with a unique motor.

Thanks for the heads up. I guess I'll keep looking. Owner sent back and said it needs some front end work too. I don't want something that's hard to find engine parts for and, for the money, to do a swap I'd be ahead of the game by buying a cleaner one for more money. I also want A/C for the Vegas summers.

Are you going to look for something else? If so I think I will buy this guy's Jeep (need the title). But if you're still interested in it, I'll wait until you decide what you want to do.
