Looks tough but how do they work in the real world? Have you seen a tire test or know anybody that has them? Who makes them and what are they called? How many tread plies and sidewall plies? What load ranges? Sorry it looks like all I have is questions.

You would never guess.... but here is the are specs you asked for:

Distinctive sidewall offers additional durability and extra off road traction

Tubeless 6-ply rated.

X-rayed and checked for out-of-round.

2-steel and 2-polyester radial plys in tread area.

Tread design provides a smooth ride and lower noise.

Wide footprint for excellent straight and lateral stability.

Guess... Parnelli Jones Dirt Grips

I couldn't believe it!!!!

The tire is made by Parnelli Jones. If you look at the center tread you will see J's and P's . I read a couple write ups on the tires and they tested well all across the board. I looks like it would be great on snow and ice. I think they are a little high priced my self. I will say they are a cool looking tire though. I still have to lean towards Swampers or BFGs. Just my personal experience and preference.

I wonder who's making them for PJ? Did you see a sidewall ply rating? Looks like they're all 6 ply. But most important do you know anyone who's using them? I'm kind of slow to buy new stuff until I see how it's going to really work out. And yes I've missed some really great deals doing that but I've also missed buying some junk too.

I foergot to add.... I may be driving my FSJ to Ouray now... so I am looking for a tire with traction and good tread life to get me there and back

JP magazine had something on them a while ago. If you want I'll try to find it tomorrow. It'll be nice to see your rig in Ouray. Why did you decide to drive instead of tow it?

OffTopic a little... How many of us are going to Ouray CO next year for the Invasion in August?

I've got the vacation time in the books. Cross my fingers, I hope I can make it!

I'm driving now.... cuz we are looking to buy a 22' camper to tow out there and then go on the PA for a week or two..

I know...so high to be towing.... BUT it's the only way I can financially swing the trip with a family of 5... looked in to renting motorhomes....$1500!!! plus $135 per every 500 miles and still can't tow the FSJ...so I'm driving her

SSHHHHHH... wife is freeing up some funds to get stuff ready for the trip !!! ;)

There's nothing wrong with towing with a tall vehicle as long as the ball is the right height and you have a good hitch.

Look pretty decent, think I'm gonna go with some BFG M/T T/A KMs though. smile.gif Gonna try and make it to Ouray...August is REALLY close though....

RB,
The little I have read about the PJ's says that they are ok but no one raved about them.
I have Wild Spirits on my Wag and they are holding up very well and the 2 reasons I bought them were 1 that my cousin put a set on his 78 3/4 ton ford that is always loaded with a ton of junk and they have made a truck that can be wheeled out of a hopelessy heavy truck that used to get stuck on wet grass and have held up for 4 years of use, and 2. they were less than $450 mounted and balanced for 4 33 x12.50's. I have found that they work well in mud, snow, and sand. They are made by TBC who also, if you believe the DOT chart that was posted here some time ago, make Cooper tires. TBC also made the Daytona Super Stags that I ran for many years until I ran out of good used ones.

OK.... thanks for the input.... but I have to raise the question AGAIN....

Now that I am most likely driving to Ouray, what tires to I get? Last time is was tossed between Swampers and Ground hogs. Now I'mm looking at PJ's tires...hmmmm...decisions....best tire for wear and tear and also to have the traction needed off road.

BTW.... SERIOUSLY thinking of going down to 36x14.50's now.... just cuz I can without it looking stupid..maybe 37's not sure yet...

I have to say that I am impressed that someone finally made a 38" radial that might have some tread life.

Todd, take a look at the Pro-Comp tires. I've been real happy with mine (I've got the AT's, since they're garranteed in at 50,000 miles, and grip good on pavement, wet or dry, and do well in anything but nasty mud.

Granted, mine are only 31's, but they do make bigger ones (I'm not sure how big). :D

I thought I read somewhere that BFG was making the M/T in 37xsomething. Can't remember for sure though... Just food for thought.

Now, if they only made a P235/75/15 with whitewalls, I'd think about it as a winter tire...

Lindel,

Thanks, but Procomp makes only up to a 35"

BTW seen the new X-Terrain by Procomp? $166 for 33x12.50's
http://www.natltire.com/ntw0799/media2/procompxt2.jpg
And for all who are running BFG's.... they a re moving up in the world of BIG TIRES!!!!

BFG AT KO's and their 2 new sizes!!!

265-70R-17 for $177
37-12.50R-17 for $319

TPICherokee,

I agree 100%...some of these other companies need to get off their rockers and make some decent LARGE tires :D

You could go with either the radial TSL or SSR Swampers. They have alot more choices of tire size. I had tsl radials on my lifted 92 Ford and loved them. I got good highway and city driving wear on them(just shy of 40K miles). You could have them sipped; then they waouls run cooler and last longer. I'm going with 37in SSR's for the wagoneer. I really like the look of the SSR's. A buddie has a set of 33's and he swears by them. I don't know if this info helps you but there it is.

River Beast

blt2crl,

It does help some...I had a buddy run the SSR's on a 2000 Ram and got close to 20K on them if he was lucky...that's whya I was staying away from the Swamper Radials.... mileage seems "iffy" with each different vehicle.

The SSR's don't make a 36x14.50 but the TSL radials do.....are you sure that these TSL Radials are good on the street? I want to cut out some of the road noise and for the extra work of siping the TSL's why not try the PJ Dirt Grips? Plus they are chekced for "out of round" before distributed.

Comments?

Goodyear does make their MTR's in 37x12.5x15, I am not sure of a price though.

Also, new BFG MT km's are supposedly avail. in 37's too, but who knows.

My BFG AT's have about....52,000 miles on them and still have life yet; BFG seems to use a long wearing rubber.

Oh BTW, my local SEARS can get almost any tire, even Swampers~ and they price match any local competiton. You may ask... So? Can you say hello Mr. Sears card. I have done this on my last 2 vehicles, I just set up a payment plan (usually 6 mos) and STICK to it.

hey River Beast, the TSL radials are a little nosiey but not any louder than my BFG's. The only place a TSL lacks on the street is in snow and ice. The sipping would help trumendously. Other than that they wear like iron.

64trvlr was telling me about this sipping prosses. Wonder where I can get that done and how much it would cost. Seems I could spend a little on my 100 dollar set of tires. :D

Bob,

You can buy an electric tire siper for about $55 and do it yourself.... just like a hot knife thru butter :D (really that's all it is)

Hey, when exactly is the Ouray, CO outing? I'm right next door in NM, so I'll be there.
As far as tires, TSL swampers are hard to beat for the price. Those dirt grips look way trick and grippy, if I had all kinds of $$, I'd go for it if they made a bigger size...

i know first hand no tire can perform as well as a bogger but the down side they dont last they are so soft the road will wear them down in no time but they grab and so well they break lots of parts

That's a cool tool. If I had Boggers or big TSL's and wanted to make some big cuts that would be the ticket. But to sipe my tires like they are right now it would take forever. I wonder how much rubber they remove when you cut. If you get one let me know how it works.

The prob with BFG's is they dont have sippings either..so they dont wear well at all IMHO...

and they only make 12.50 wide..no 14.50 or 15.50's like todd needs.

I am not a fan of BFG at all....but thast just me I guess ;p
