Hi, I'm new to this forum and was wondering if there are any np229 experts that may
be able to help me. I have the same problem with 2 different tc's and it is that neither
will stay in low range without holding them in, they have both been dissassembled (1
by me and the other at an auto wreckers and I am wondering if both were some how
assembled wrong. I have the manual with assembly instructions etc. and was pretty
careful with the assembly but??? I have also tried linkage ajustments etc. and I don,t
think its that Any help much appreciated, I've got 2 GW's and have been working on
them for years but still haven't got everything mastered yet.

Your shifter linkage is too long.

Simple fix actualy.

First, check to make sure your tranny/T-case mount isn't messed up causing it to jerk around and pull out of Low.

If not, then pull two cotter pins and take that threaded bar out that connects the floor shifter to the actual lever on the T-case. It's about 6 or 7 inches long. Threaded on both ends, you should make the over-all length of the rod 5.9 inches. That should fix ya right up.

#1. What is the condition and/or state of your trans mount???

#2. Are both your motor mounts still intact??

I had both issue's and had horrible shaking/lurching/clunking in addition to leaping right out of low range..

When the engine/trans/tcase moves around that much on the frame under acceleration and varying load's, the linkage will react with it. If your linkage is fairly tight it can easily shift your case..

I replaced my one bad M-mount with another OEM, and put in a Poly Trans mount (poly T-mount made a world of differance).

OK, you guys fixed that so easily, can I squat on this thread?:

My '83 229 won't let me shift from hi to low fairly frequently. I don't use low very frequently, but more often than not, I can't move the shifter. My "fix" is to crawl under and whack the shifter mechanism a bit, and then, voila!, it will shift fine.

Is this internal or external like beartrap's? Fatal?

Incidentally, my J10 had this case, and the previous owner of the J10 had the same problem. Now it's been transplanted to the Wag.

On my 208 (really similar as far as the shifting goes). I can go between 2 and 4 real easy and could go into low too if i do it the way most people do but i choose to shut off the motor in neutral then pull it up into low.. no grinding this way.. just something to try. then from lo back past neutral to the other gears i shut it off again in neutral

I agree with ClarkGriswald as I went through the same issue on my 83 when I bought it (it was the reason I got it cheap :D ). The drivers engine mount was broken and when load was applied it would jump out of gear on the tranny or tcase depending on how you held your breath. I replaced the mount, checked the linkage for adjustment and have not had a problem since.
Oh and I am no expert, just my $0.02

THANKS TO ALL FOR THE GREAT RESPONSES,i'M SURE GLAD i FOUND THIS SITE. I'M PRETTY SURE THAT THIS TROUBLE IS AND INTERNAL TC PROBLEM AS ALL MY MOUNTS ARE NEW AND I CAN REMOVE THE TC LINKAGE AND IT WILL STILL POP OUT, IT DOESN'T FEEL LIKE IT IS GOING INTO LOW RANGE PROPERLY, I DON'T THINK THE DETENT IS DROPPING INTO PLACE WHEN IT IS SHIFTED INTO LOW, HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM AFTER REBUILDING A 229 TC.
