Well I took off the heads to get ready to bring them in and this is what the engine and the heads looked like. Is this normal wear and tear for an AMC 360? Or was somenthing going on with this engine? Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening again? Just click on the link and then you can see the ones titled head and block. Thanks.

If I had to guess I would say that it's residue from all the oil you were burning due to the excessive blowby caused by worn rings. Or, you were running rich. But I doubt running rich would cause that much bulid up.

they look like all the other heads and blocks that are ready to rebuild as far as causing the condition that they are in .......its called driving you can slow the process by staying home

How did I know you would have all the answers, Mikie? LOL. I know it is caused from driving but I was wondering if it was to rich, bad rings or wrong gap on plugs or something out of the ordinary. As soon as I took off the heads a lot of carbon fell out into my hands. Is this always there? I have never seen it before. The block is not scored in any way though. The last motor I pulled apart, the pistons were black but nothing like this. And that engine had about 200,000 on it.

Pc is this the new motor or the one our the old one?
Mine looked like that from an intake leak, it was sucking oil in from the valley side made me think i broke some rings.

Carbon will build up when you have a lot of miles. What I see on yours isnt bad at all. I have seen engines WAY worse.
Looks like the cylinder tot he left was running lean (if thast the rear cylinder thats normal for a V8) Although the one next to that looks lean as well...while the others look fine. as far as running rich/lean. But the 2nd from the right looks as those its getting oil. This could be from the rings, or it could be from dried up valve seals, which would be the most common thing.
If the heads are being rebuilt you will get new valve seals, so if they are the problem that will be solved.
As for performance, if you where closer I would port them for you. AMC heads have nice large valves (largest I know of for a factory small block)So porting the intake runners and exhuast ports would make a nice increase in flow. Getting rid of any and all casting marks and such. A 3 angle valve job would be nice too...but they can cost a little bit depending on where you go.

It is the old engine. It looks to me like burnt oil and lots of it. I did a compression test on the engine about three months before I pulled it and they were all good at around 135.

Looks like my 200K motor I am overhauling right now. I wire brushed the pistons and got some of the carbon off. Remember gas is carbon based. (with O and H's to keep it company) I say don't worry. As previously mentioned "I have seen much worse with fewer miles.

Those valves look a lot like spark plugs do when they are pulled for examination. It seems like you could make the same diagnosis about the engine's condition. Do I see the plugs still in the head?--the pic is pretty small. Carbon buildup is normal to some extent, that's why they invented ridge reamers! :D

No the plugs are still not in the head. So we are in agreeance then that this is normal wear and tear and there is nothing to worry about? Ok I will march on then and not worry about it. Thanks.
