Can this be done without removing the pistions?
My headgaskets blew out and my rad drained into the engine. I'm going to be pulling the block soon, just want to know how deep I have to go into the block.

You can get to, and change the Crankshaft by turning the engine over (physically flipping it) and pulling the oil pan. Remove the oil pickup and the crank can then be accessed. Why are you chenging the crank? But not the pistons? I guess what I do not understand is why you would need to change the crankshaft but dont need to rebuild the engine. Never heard of anyone doing this before. Just curious as to the reason, thats all. Not criticizing.

I'll never do that again. It is alot easier to remove the engine and put it on a engine stand. The main thing is to push the pistons and rods up to the top of the cylinder and roll the crankshaft to get to all of them as needed, then pull the rods back down to reconnect to the crankshaft journals.
