Ok... um.. This guy I know... Not me of course. But he has a 1985 Grand Wagoneer just like mine. And he just changed his rear main seal just like I did but he wasn't so careful putting the oil pan back on. When he started up his engine it made some funny noises from the bottom end. Well, I took it... er, he took it to a shop and had them look it over. They found and fixed the bent oil pickup tube and now it works fine...

So just be carefull and make sure you don't break things when putting them back together...

I have a real close friend who is gonna do the RMS as soon as he gets off his keister...do you have any advice as to how to avoid this problem? Is it difficult, or is it jus tone of those things that once you know what to watch out for..it's no big deal? How long did it take you...I mean you "friend"?

If you're not lifted, you have to make sure to get the frame up on jackstands with the front wheels off the ground. That makes the axle droop as low as it's going to go.

Getting the oil pan in and out is easy if you're carefull and take your time. I ended up sliding it out over the passenger side spring and out the wheel well. Pulling it back in, I didn't work it around the oil pickup as gently as I should have... er, my friend didn't... Aw, to heck with it. I worked the pan in too roughly and knocked the pickup tube around so a connecting rod cap was hitting it. A little more patience and I would have been fine... :(

One recommendation, spend the extra time to make sure everything is completely clean (all gasket mating surfaces, bolt holes and bolts anyway) and use a good gasket adhesive and RTV for the 4 piece seal. Also, lay out the gasket parts on the pan so you know which one goes where and which way it goes in. I did that and the gasket went right in with no trouble.

Oh yea, and it should only take a full afternoon if you're reasonably competent with the tools and have everything you need.

Oh, and the most important part. Make sure the top half of the main seal is well lubricated with fresh oil. It goes in so much better that way. Be carefull and follow the instructions or you'll shave some of the outside edge of the seal off if you aren't carefull. And that will casue a leak.

My only advice is to get it up to normal running temperature and let it sit overnight in the location you'll be doing the work, that way all the oil will be drained from the top of the engine. Move it right before you do the work and you'll be sorry.

isnt RTV a good gasket adhesive? I have a tube of stuff that is specifically gasket adhesive. It goes on thinner and gets tacky just like glue. It worked better than RTV. But the RTV was needed at the gasket joints...
