One of the guys that visits my local club forum has been messing around with this... This is his post, what do you guys think?

His post:

I have been running with the TFI upgrade for about 4 years. While it is a substantial upgrade over stock it still has had some drawbacks. The biggest one being death of the Duraspark box on a regular enough basis to be annoying.

Last nights project was to swap a 4 pin HEI module for the Duraspark box. After I figured out what I did wrong, and I am not telling anybody what it fired right up and warmed up to a nice steady idle. Haven't got the CJ quite mobile enough for a road test yet but I am getting close.

I am not sure how significant of an upgrade this is long term but its a whole lot easier to carry a spare HEI module (and cheaper these days) than a spare Duraspark unit.

Anyone else here try this yet?

1st draft drawing. I have since found out we may be able to delete the resistor wire and the I terminal connection and run +12vdc at the coil. Give the system just a bit more kick

I think he may be one to something but only time well tell.... What do you guys think?

Why not just go with a one-wire HEI dizzy setup and be done with it? Looks to me like he's going the long way around to get to the same place?

Yah, I believe the point behind staying with the TFI setup is the duraspark box. Once you take that out of the equation you basically have an HEI setup anyway just without the coil in the cap. If you really want to run a remote coil get an older HEI dizzy with it in the cap. :D

Sounds good for people who already have invested in the TFI setup. Keep your distributor, etc. I think it's a great idea if the HEI module is alot more reliable (and I bet it is) than the duracrap box.

Where'd he get that HEI module?

I LIKE . trons is trons they dont know it isnt a duraspunk box only thing that concerns me is the connections .think you might want to do it in a way that cant fall off.maybe drill and tap the tabs on the module and use screws?also on your crimps did you use a stake on crimper or the squeeze type? it has been my experince that crimps that are not staked will wiggle out. i think it is always best to solder and heat shrink wiresless chance of corrosion and poor electrical contact.also might want to mount module in small metal box for shielding.way to go otherwise good thinking.

When I was having trouble with my jtruck my father-in-law done this a couple years back. It was only a temp setup so I don't have any long term info except that he also done it to a ford in '98-'99 and it is still running that way.
