Today I used the GW to pull down a partially fallen tree, but unfortunately I did not get pics. A big birch tree in our yard has been dying recently, and in the heavy wind last night the top half of the 60-70ft tall tree cracked off and got caught on the lower branches. We used the Jeep and a length of heavy cable to pull the tree and tear out the other branches. Without incident (aside from gouging a little trench in the lawn) we got the tree on the ground and partially broken up with the chainsaw. The Jeep was great, attached the cable (with soft weights tied to it) to the hitch and slowly tugged the tree in 4wd. I'd have preferred having a winch and proper recovery shackles, but this was ok. I wish I had snapped a few pics, it was kinda crazy looking with this cable wrapped around the treetop, taking out braches as the Jeep pulled it down. As I sawed up the treetop, I found the area where it had broken to be full of grubs, so one of these invasive beetle species must have done this. I really liked that tree, maybe it will recover. At least we get a bunch more firewood.

sounds like you had some fun. well not all fun, then the work cutting it up. fsj's are good for making new roads too. back when i wanted to build my shop i took the jeep and made a road going back their. i was impressed with the size of a small tree that it would run right over and push down. but then like you the work began cutting it up and clearing it.

Reminds me of friends pulling a hedge out of the front yard with a bronco II, strapped the hedge to the front grill guard, stuck it in reverse, popped the clutch and left the grill guard/bumber layin' in the front yard attached to the hedge. Said they ment to do that, best way to work on a Ford.

Is it a white birch or a brown birch? Brown birch smells like root beer. Anyway to properly use birch for fire wood, you hafta split it so it can season. If you dont, it will just rot.

Most tree species will die a slow or immediate death after losing their tops. The birches are beautiful trees but once they get infected they die off quickly.
I used my GW to tow home my non-starting 89 volvo yesterday, 30 miles with no problems.
