THERE ARE TWO GRAND WAGS IN MY SHED.

ONE IS BLUE, ONE IS RED.

BOTH TRANSFER CASES ARE VERY DEAD.

I'M VERY PISSED, AND OFF TO BED.

OK, enough poetry.
Last night I found some play in front connection of my 91's case. I figured I'll pull it and maybe have it rebuilt some day. In the mean time, I dragged my 86 out of the mud, got it to start made sure 4x4 worked and pulled it inside to "steal" the case for a while. To my suprise, its an NP228. (I find this after wiping off the name tag) I havent seen anything good about the
228 so I decided to go for plan B. Next I pull 89 in check case fluid, looks good, so I remove the case. When playing with it up on the bench I noticed it was pretty noisey. Next, I played stinky finger with the drain hole look for metal chunks. BINGO !! This case is dead too.

Do I waste my time putting in the 228 with 150 k on it, or get the 229 rebuilt?

Use the 228 for now, and rebuild the 229; it's probably in need of shifter-forks and maybe the shift-collars, plus a bearing or two.

at least with the 228 there is no million dollar magic viscuus coupling to worry about. its a simple open center diff smile.gif

Million dollar viscous coupling? I only paid $750,000 for mine. Scotty, ya gotta shop around buddy....

Well, here it goes, it took me almost 3 hrs to tear out the case last night. I'm hoping to cut my time down a little this time around.

I don't think the 228 is such a bad case. Certainly not compared to the 229, the limited slip coupling is not that big of an advantage when you consider the problems it can cause. I have a 203 in a suburban that basicly opperates the same way, and it does just fine. I've been stuck in the unlocked position before and had three wheels spinning, I guess the truck did not realize only one was suppose to spin. Most all your real wheelin' is in low locked position anyway.

Does the 228 operate as smoothly in 4 hi as the 229, or does goofy stuff happen as the center diff does its thing?

on dry pavement youd never know the difference. on an icy covered street,it may do some somewhat goofy stuff as the center diff "hunts" for traction. ive never driven a 203 or 228 equipped rig in the snow, but id be willing to bet the goofy stuff would be very minimal,as the traction on a snow covered street may be low,but still fairly consistent.

if you slide off the road and get stuck, you may need locked low range to ensure that at least 1 front and 1 rear are spinning ;) but no biggie there, same could happen with the 229.

You con do front wheel burnouts with a 228 really easy ;)

crank the wheel and stomp on the gas :D

In snow any full time system sucks once you are in deep and slick stuff. The LSD will go from limited slip to lots of slip. I have seen Subaru outbacks get stuck in the snow spinning one front tire many times.
