Just had a '78 J10 practically fall into my lap. It's a Levi edition truck, rusted out floorboard but great price. It's got a 360, 4 spd and obviously 4WD. What trans and t-case will it have? Any idea on gearing? The gas gauge doesn't work any ideas on the possible probable cause?

Thanks!

T18A tranny, D20 tcase and probably 3.54 gears.

Gas guage may be a lot of things. I'd check the power and ground wores attached to the sender first, then test the sender.

Thanks KaiserMan. The owner was saying the 4spd they used in the 80's, forget what it was but was also saying NP205. Just didn't sound right.

One more question.

The pignose grille and 1 piece bumper were introduced in '79, right? So it might not be a '78...

Yeah. If it's got a pignose grill and a one peice front bumper as original equippement, it would be a 79 or an 80.

It's got a brow, so a '79?

True. Just thought the brow went away in '80

80's had brows. Brows went away on 81's.

Sounds like it's going to be a 79 or 80. Maybe you'll get real lucky, and someone just slapped a pignose on a 78. 78 was the last year for the 401. Hint hint. Check the #'s on the block.:) ;)

Easy, what side it the front diffy on ?
79- Passanger side
80+ Driver side.

Is the tranfercase shifter close to the driver (80+) or passanger (79-)

Tranny does it have PTO covers and looks like something out of the dump truck with granny low? If so T18 (Year 79-)
If it is a aluminum baby tranny then T-176 (not a bad tranny) (Year 80+)

Betcha it has a T176/208 combo in it based on the 'one used in the 80s' comment. Should be just fine as long as you go easy on the holeshots :D

Otherwise, yeah T18/D20 if it's really older.

Man, you go through FSJs quicker than I went through girls at my first apartment

I've been told I'm responsible for the death of more FSJ's then PennDot:eek:

I dunno about this truck, definately a 360. Anyway, just stumbled accross a '77 Golden Eagle with a 401(swapped in) T-18 and a D20. The GE's in better shape, but a few more $'s. Will keep ya'll posted.
