I need someone who is knowledgable on the np229 selecttrac system. Any takers?? Also...what the hell are splines and where are they.I really need help because Im afraid to drive my Waggy for fear that something might break.

Mario, quoting a complete run down on the operation and theory of the 229 sectrac system is beyond my brain power and typing skills. How about telling us what's it doing...or not doing and we'll go from there? smile.gif
Most 229 probs especially the 83-84 years that also have a vacuum operated front axle are vacuum related. Either broken/diconnected/leaking lines between the reservoir and switch or the lines going to the x-case itself or the front axle. More likely those under the rig though. Or a frozen (from lack of use) vac motor on the front axle or the one on the x-case.

OK Joe....here it goes
Last Sat coming home on the freeway, the range lever popped out into neutral. So I stopped and put it back onto 2hi...and it did it again.
I got home via the streets and it did well,
Thinking it might be the range rod or mode rod I went under to adjust. Well the two rods where they connect to the transfer case where not aligned the same so I realigned them. I started the Wag and in 2wd drive I had no power to the wheels. I shifted to 4wd and I had power. So I put her on jack stands to see what was going on.I have no power to the drivers in 2wd but in 4wd I do. At 1 point I had power only to the front axel.At this time I was getting a head ache. Then I discoverd that the Transfer case was low in oil..How low?? I dont know, only that i could not feel any oil when I stuck my finger in there. I hope that is the problem. Any advice Joe?? Or anybody else out there.Im about to cry...lol.
PS...I now have pics of the wag

first thing, refill the transfer case. i believe that would account for it slipping out of gear while driving, but so would a vacuum leak.
then, make sure the linkages are set to factory standards.
with that done you should "theoretically" have rear wheel drive in 2wd, and all 4 if you shift into 4wd. depending on what happens then, depends on if anything is broken.
some splines are on your axle shafts, but i wouldn't be overly worried about that yet. to test them your hubs, etc .... shift the car in 4wd with the car on so the vacuum engages the axle. then, shut the car off and jack the front end. spin the drive shaft with your hand, and if both front wheels turn then your splines are working fine and so is your front axle vacuum system. if not, then you may have a vucuum problem.
but fill the case up first and re-adjust the linkage just to make sure. simple solutions first...... =)

OH MY GOD......
I drained the x case and there was about enough fluid to fill a can of beer.
It took in about 3 quarts.
So now it runs great in 4 wheel drive, but shifting the range rod makes a grinding noise. Also no power to the rear axel. After I shift from 4 to 2 wheel, it rolls about 5 feet then no power to drive train. It engages into 4 wheel drive nicely. As for adjusting the mod and range rod, I cant center them evenly. Now What??...lol
Mario
Mario,
I'll send you an email w/jpg that tells you how to adjust the rods correctly.
could i get a copy of the jpeg as well? thanks. solved??

not solved yet LRRH,
It's in 4 wheel drive Hi. It wont go into 2 wheel drive. I hope i can still drive it because im gonna have to, since my wife needs to take the kids to the doc in the Taurus.I hope I dont damage anything. I cant align the mode and range rod. I cant reach above to adjust the range rod since my hand does not fit....any input on this is greatly appreciated.
Mario
don't worry, you can drive the 229 on dry pavement! i've never adjusted the rods on a 229 so I'm not sure what you're looking at...sorry.
