Got my new Edelbrock on 88GW. When I put the pedal down when cruising at 55 mph to pass it doesn't drop down to the "passing gear" then upshift back. Is this correct?

Better make sure you have that transmission linkage adjusted right, correct me if I am wrong folks but thats a crucial thing. Can damage your tranny if its run incorrectly.

thats right, clarkgriswald, the torqueflight trannies use a "throttle pressure valve" to control fluid pressure, and the shiftpoints and firmness of the shifts. the linkage that goes from the carb to the tranny is what tells the tranny how much your foot is on the pedal,so that it knows how/when to shift.it is not simply a kickdown linkage.it is very important that tis likage be adjusted properly so that tranny shifts correctly. in extreme cases, improper adjustment can even cause premature transmission failure. http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/eek.gif it also will cause early or delayed upshifts, and not kicking down into the passing gear like yours is doing.

I gotta dumb question-

Why are we supposed to put the vehicle on jackstands to adjust the throttle linkage? (According to Haynes and other tech stuff I've read)

I read Tom Collins info in the tech section. Mine seems to be set too long, resulting in downshifting when the throttle is partially pushed, and delayed or no kickdown to passing gear when floored.

I thought I had this dang throttle linkage thing licked a few months ago. Crud.

Another thing you could check is the fuse box. On my '78 (TH400) there is a fuse for the tranny kickdown. I imagine this fuse works off of throttle position and forces a downshift when the RPMs pass a set level, like passing at 55 mph. Having said that, a three-speed tranny ain't gonna do a lot of shifting at that speed...the gears are only good for a certain RPM range...hmmm. Typical Jeep owner reply: "Throw parts at it and see what sticks!" Good luck.

i cannot possibly imagine why the vehicle should be on jack stands.im not even sure of the correct adjustment procedure,i just tinker with it until im happy with the shiftpoints.
