i recently converted my quadra-trac to a 15a-dana20 combo out of a 79 j10. i am in the process of getting new gears (3.54) with the aid of two new dana 44's. i know this isn't super low but it's better than the 3.07 i had in it. the question is, i want a lower craw3l ration in the t-case. i know ford dana20's had a ratio of 2.46:1 and was wondering how hard would it be to swap the gears out of it and into mine.

like pc said, not quite that easy.i think there are a couple years of bronco d20 that the gears will swap.the rest have different size shift forks, and thus the gears have the same tooth count and pitch, but the jeep d20 shift forks do not interchange.you cant use the bronco shift forks cause the case is configured differently.

the answer is to either a) modify the jeep shift fork for the lower slider to use withthe bronco gear, or b) use only the upper slider from the bronco, along with the rest of the gears from a spicer 18.

either way,the case will require some internal clearancing for the larger upper slider, and possibly some grinding at the bottom for the larger lower slider.

your t16 will have a 6 internal sline input gear,so youll need to obtain the appropriate 18 8 23 6 spline,29 tooth input gear to match the new low range gears.

heres a link that lists the spicer #s and goes alittle more into detail:

I know it's kinda pricey, but Tera also makes a 3.15 gearset for the dana 20, I think it's somewhere between $750-800

can a D20 be run as a doubled tcase with an adapter? That would be nice....

'preciate the tech talk guys. unfortunately i'm not that mechanically inclined to take on a task of that magnitude yet so for now i'll just run the regular 2.07:1 with the 3.54 gears it's not that bad...but if anyone is near by and wants to teach this country boy a thing or two i'll gladly room and board ya. thanks again.

The D20 has a 2.03:1 ratio. If you can wait a little bit I am moving to Jacksonville on the 1st of Oct. I know that it is on the other side of the state but I do like to travel on the weekends. And I always wanted to see the whole state, Maybe I can do some Mountain wheeling.

glen, you wild man i didn't think i'd see you on here, but good to hear from you. has that truck got the 15a, dana20 combo if so let me know. do you know about this gear swapping idea i got? let me know. porkchop said he's rolling down here soon and he might get in on the action. we're on for tuesday and we might need to crank up the air compressor too. i got a buddy coming with me and i might trim those fenders out while we're in the process. if you're not careful we might start calling you sanford and son with all those jeep parts.

well if you are going to do the bronco gear swap you want one that was off of a manual tranny, and from 66-72, they have a 2.46 low range, per 66 one I am told have the sam 2.03 and the post 72 have a 2.6 something. They will not work I am told. I got one out of a 70 and Scotty but it together for me.

Also they do make a kit for the bronco dana 20s so you can put them together . It is call a Cold Duck. Here is the web site that talked about it and there is a link on there for the people that make it
