Ok so i was talking to the owner of the shop that my jeep now resides in. I got him to agree to Sponser my waggy for competition!!!!! So now I have to do my homework and find all the competitions around here. I know that Gulches has the Mega 4X4. But what else is there around here? Hopefully this will turn into my build thread!!! Thanks so much in advance for all of your replies. And I am open to any suggestions for how to modify my rig.

If I were you, I would find the area of off-road rec that interests you the most...

Also think about competitions that you would have a decent chance to at least place in.
Sponsors REALLY like that part, and will become a lot more 'helpful' when you are showing off those big stickers of theirs so well.
It also helps gather more sponsors :)

And yeah, choose something you are interested in. Otherwise it will wear on your like a real job.

actually my current sponsor is doing this because he likes offroading in general and this is an excuse for him to go to more event and to participate some, as he and I will be switching between driving and spotting. i'm looking at just general trails, rock climbing, and of course mud. and at the present time i think my sponsor is just providing access to the shop whenever i want it, paint whenever i scratch mine off, and a trailer ride to and from events

are there specific events/types of wheeling that you would be competing in?

there’s different setups for each different types of competitions.

i guess i'm looking for an all around rig untill i decide which type of terrain i like most, and go from there. i guess it depends on what events i can find. Really i'm looking for anything in SC, NC, GA or anything close to SC!

Obviously you haven't seen Dust to Glory yet! Go rent it, watch it and then tell us that you want to stay near SC. :D

Whatever comps you decide to run you'll need to lose some weight... on your rig :p These beasts are huge and need to the pounds cut off of them. I don't want to be the wet blanket but the baby jeeps, zuks and yotas will own you if you don't come fully prepared. I suggested cutting the top off, bobbing the rear and narrowing the front and rear. a good set of sliders and cage in the 1.75" range will be good too. You could run 1.5" but that's up to you.

I'd look at aluminum beadlocks and a fairly lighter tire. I wouldn't go over 39.5". Why? Most comps will split you into 2 categories and they will use 40" as the splitting point. Check the competition and see what ypu're up against. If you want to run the lower class do it. If you think you can take the upper class do it too.

I really could go on for days. I've given a lot of thought to this and would really like to compete but my rig is way too heavy and big. I might do it still for fun but nothing major.

ok so far the only competition i've found around here has a under 34 in and open front and back. and i have been planning on a chop top now i have the room to work with it and the tools!! yeah i plan on starting on the easiest class possible!!

There will be a big event in Harlan, KY in June... rock climbing, tire piles, mud bog, log pits... plenty of stuff to break your stuff on!

There're aren't many organized 4x4 competitions in NC and SC (that I'm aware of, anyway) other than some mud bogs and sand drags down east. There have been some big crawl comps in eastern TN, but they are hard to pin down because they seem to change names and organizers every year.

I'd recommend keeping your eyes on NC4x4 and Pirate.

Good Luck and Congrats! Doesn't River Rock have a comp? I think you might be able to compete in both crawls and muds for the stock classes but anything above that you would have to pick one and stick with it. You can't be competitive at a mud run with a rock rig.

NCjeepers. keep an eye out for comp events. mostly look for ones after April, cuz most comps you gotta be 18.... darn age limits...

does river rock have a website?
and yeah i plan on staying in the lowest class possible untill i start winning them everytime then i'll move up!!

About the only thing I can think of is the "Redneck Nationals" that is held all around the state over the year. It is mostly mudd racing and jumping over old cars etc. With all of the lifted trucks running around the southeast you would think there would be more competitions.

You definitely should look into WEROCK.
http://http://www.we-rock.cc/
If nothing else, they have a well documented rule book that will help guide you in your build.
A lot of the safety oriented stuff is gonna apply to most organized comps.
I would assume you'd go for something like their Modified Stock class.

WeROCK is insane!!!! i wish i had the funds to jump on that!!!! but i'd never make it.... i will look more into that once i get my cage and all that great safety stuff built. as of right now i am trying to stay away from rocks. they all require a roll cage and i don't have the money right now for a cage build. mostly cuz i don't have the tubes benders and whatnot to design the cage.

how do you find out where the redneck nationals is held?

jeepboy69
11-30-2007, 12:33 PM
hey benders are cheep go look at habor freigh its not the best out there but i works i use one quite a bit im out of tubing but i want to buy new metal olny for saftey so im serching town but good luck i prolly could get you a set of racing seats for 150 in oklahoma if you can afford shiping

i've got a junk celica sitting in my garage that i'm prolly gonna steal seats out of. and i have to wait till spring (18th B-day) to compete in anything, so i'm kinda just in the clean/inspection stage right now

I heard that Pelion has some kind of mud bog. The guy that told me about it name is Gator. Met him at the flea market. It was nice to see someone take off their hat when they saw your engine.

ok so as soon as i get my chebby back (engine recall and still under warrantee!) i get to stop driving my waggy again. so now my question is in order to get ready for gulches comp (summer one i think) should i start with my body mods or my suspension/drivetrain? keep in mind that i am entering the lowest class (34 in and under for tires and open ffront and back diffs) I think Basic plan for suspension is 2 in BL and 2 or 4 in SL. and my body is gonna be a mix of different rigs i've seen on here. of course painted OD greeen!!

I would start with the suspension mods first. I would do a SOA and a SF from Tad. They are a good price for the lift you get out of them after that I would start looking for 1 ton axles. DONT be in a hurry do you reasearch and take your time. You will save a lot of money that way. Other then that keep doing your reasearch join as many local fourms as you can. That is where you will learn what is going on in your area. It will also let you know who you wll be running against. Dont post a lot about your jeep on the other fourms then people will know what you have and what they have to beat. Do MORE reasearch!!!

Hope that helps

Actually, there were several (seven, IIRC) presidents under the Articles Of Confederation. But for some reason, no one cares about them.

Hampton123,

Was in the same boat when started my build.

1st suspension. A mild 2-3" lift with fender trimming will easliy fit 33s with a little rubbing in the rear wheel well. In the rear a shackle flip, lose overload springs, and traction bar. For the front keep spring retainer straps in the rear because I bent several main leafs when I removed the strap or do a shackel reverse which would be my first choice.

2nd gears/tranny. my wag hated the 3.53s that were in it. If rules allow weld up the rear for a cheap reliable locker. Very simple and helps more then the bigger tires. A simple shift kit for tranny helps hold the heavy truck in 1st down hills and lets you pick the gears. The Quadra-junk was ok up until I put 35s on. I broke the rear output shaft the first trip up Pritchet Canyon, I hated the vacum operation of it. Needs to be in four wheel drive before you get stuck or wont engage. Preventative maintenance is your friend with this transfer.

3rd body mods. Bob and Dovetail the rear which help departure angles, I was always scrapping the rear and hung up several times. Cut as much of the front fender out as you can. Many obstacles are not possible due to low clearance of front fender. Build a cage for driver/spotter. Chop the top which will reduce weight which helps more than you realize. If rules don't allow chopped top then remove as many windows as possible and ditch the bumpers or move them up again for angles. Build a cage for driver/spotter. Replace thin rocker with tubing or boatside the truck if rules allow.

4th is motor mods. Mild cam and depending on the year get rid of points. I ran points for about 3 years before I could upgrade to HEI. I would go EFI but I haven't done that yet because of my lack of electical skills.

Lastly, projects like this take a lot of time. Double or triple estimated build time. Something unexpected always comes up. When I did my cage I figured 3 days ended up with taking 8 working days.

Good luck
