View Full Version : the pinion plot thickens...

well, i thot it was wierd that i was having such trouble with my rear pinion angle, and thot it was simply that the transfer case output was so low.that fact certainly is not helping, but today i figured out that that is not 100% of the prollem.
i took my rear end out to rotate the perches, and while griding, discovered that my axletubes where the perches are not round! they are squished in the front, like the pinion was very forcibly pushed upward, twistig the perch into the tube, sort of. somewhat hard to describe. the tubes are round enuff on the backside, that i can rotate the perches and point the pinoin downward(id be introube if the pinion needed togo up-the perches wont fit where the tube are squished).now my only dilema is what happened to them? was it that way when i installed it? the first time i had it out i was beatin on it pretty hard with a broken front driveshaft(dumpin the clutch at 2500 rpm in the middle of a hill),but i have a hard time believein that my 258 makes enuff torque to twist the perches into the axletubes, especially with my squishy rear springs.
does anyone care to specualte? been that way? or do yall think my litle six actually did some damage to it?
ur thots? smile.gif

This sounds very familar.....I bet that it was a combo of your 258 and the big tires that did it. Did the Wag that the axles came off of have any large tires? Was it stock? I am bettting that you did it that first day out.

Scotty,
Are running a model 20 rear end? The model 20's are known for really weak axle tubes that will bend under CJ use let alone big tires and the torque of a 258 in low range.

both my axles came from the 78 or so cherokee that clarkgriswald parted out. i do not think that it had large tires on it.it was the one that was destroyed, ritualistically,if yall remember that smile.gif so maybe it had seen some hard use...
jeepbob, the rearend is a QT offset dana 44.
ifn' my little 258 did do this damage, how long will it last, assuming im nicer to it smile.gif ? we prolly wont be goin wheelin in the winter as much,so im hopin it will hang in there until i can get my full floating 44 built.i could put my amc 20 back in,but then id have to swap the front gears, too, since i dont have a set of 3.54 gears for the amc 20.
i was stuck in the middle of this hill, and there was a bump i was trying to get over to make it the rest of the way up. i was givig it this hell in 4wd,and twisted my front driveshaft in half. i mean it twisted like 5 times before it broke. i continued to give it hell for awhile before i got out to look and realized the front shaft was broken.it was pretty slick, that day, tho, and i wouldnt really think there was enuff traction available to squish axletubes.i guess htere was enuff traction to pretzel my front driveshaft, tho  , so maybe there was...
hmmmm.

Hey, scotty, get with, Todd, and he can tell you how he fixed his after this happened to him. I am pretty sure it was a cheap quick fix.

Scotty,
Think about what you just said and I will give you the reason the tubes or spring perches gave out. You were in low range and prolly 1st or 2nd gear. You then put the motor into its peak torque range and let the clutch go. By the time you multiply out the torque thru the tranny then the t/case and lets not forget the rear gears you have somewhere between 7000 to 9000 ft/lbs of torque to put down on on the ground. Now figure you get traction, something is gonna give. With the big tires requiring X amount of torque to turn, the weak link becomes the axle tubes and perches. This is why I will not run tires bigger than 33's on a D44. They are just not made to handle the high torque loads. You really need a D60 in the back.

now that is not what i want to hear
i dont want a d60,i like the ground clearance of my 44.i also dont want to fool with 8 lug wheels. im not sure what, exactly, had gotten into me that day(too much testosterone flowing,maybe... smile.gif )im normally a very deliberate, careful driver.
i guess well see how long this one lasts, and see if the same thing happens to the next one before i start worrying about axlehousing strength being an issue.maybe it can be stengthened somehow if it turns out to be a prollem. :( i really like my 44...
thanx for the responses,guys...
