View Full Version : Milemarker winch?

I have two Jeeps, a CJ3B and a '64 PU that I would like to have winches. My thought is to get one Milemarker hydraulic and make a quick disconnect so I can switch it between the two. It seems the hydraulic's price isn't much more than a comparable electric winch. I have more faith in hydraulics than electric, except of course when the engine is off. I would appreciate any comments, ideas, or experiences.

I put alot of thought into this as well. I went with a Ramsey RE10000 that mounts in a Receiver hitch (I had to make the cradle and everything for it). I put Heavy Duty jumper cable clamps on the ends of the power cord for quick connections to the winch. I ran 1/0 cable from the battery side post for the positive juice and a battery terminal post through the rear of the Jeep as seen here...

Here is the winch mount. Alot less messier than a hydraulic winch. I was thinking of a Milemarker as well until I heard they aren't allowed in some 4x4 events because when the engine dies (winching up a hill, carb. dies) there isn't a brake in a Hyd. winch and some vehicles have ran backwards and flipped killing a few people. But then again that's all hear-say. I went ahead and went with an RE10000. It'll still dead lift an Excursion.

You would also have to devise a way to plug of the hydrolic lines when not in use. I don't belive that Mile Marker recommends the mobile set up of their winches. I would recommend calling them and asking their advise. I personally have a ramsey rep8000 very cheap (relatively) a little slow but nice and reliable.

I love hydraulic winches myself... I need another one! smile.gif
I've been pondering a way around the whole no-engine no-winch problem. I think it could be solved with some simple additional parts... If you went to a GOOD Big truck wreckers, you should be able to find a 12V hydraulic pump. Used for power tailgates, and hydraulic accessories (dump boxes etc) Some creative wiring, and plumbing, and if engine was out, a flip of a switch, and you should be able to have power steering and winch... (If you go w' hydroboost brakes, you could have power brakes too)

Thanks for the input thus far. I figured that if the engine is kapooy then I have more to worry about than the winch. I was planning on putting a pto winch on the 3B and leaving the '64 alone. Then came the bright idea to have something that interchanges... I read in an old post that there is a mythical pto for the Dana 20 t-case...

Here's a thought... Engine dies in deep mud or water... Nothing is wrong with it, but we do know not to crank it. If you have a hydralic wench you are screwed. I had a friend dump a Sami on it's side in a big "ditch" and the engine died. It refused to crank while laying sideways. After it lays like that for a few minutes it wouldn't be good to crank it anyway. If he had a hydro we'd still be trying to get the Sami home. 4500 Warn pulled it right out. :D 5 minutes later the transmission died. We still had to walk off the mountain... Oh well.

If you decide to go the MM route, find a Parker Hose dealer, they are usually combined with goodyear hose and rubber stores. They will have the exact setup you need to make the winch portable.
As far as the electric backup pump, I was thinking the same thing, but they are really pricey. You can browse through a bunch of them @ http://www.forthefarm.com
They have a lot of winches there too !

What about hydraulic pumps that the low riders use? Or is it a different animal? (the pumps not the people) :D

CAUTION....i way talking to somebody, dont remember who, but they were saying that with the milemarker wench that if your wenching and the engine dies it will freewheel. that not good. i heard they have no locking device for this situation. i dont know if its true of not but you may want to check it out. it could mean the diferance between life and death for your jeep of somebody in the way.
