View Full Version : My Truck smells like gas - any ideas?

My truck is smelling up my garage something fierce. Unfortunately, the garage is part of the house, so every morning you are greeted by the smell of gas with your coffee. :0 "I love the smell of gasoline in the morning..." It is not the usual oily smell I have become used to. It smells like fresh gas. The day I bought it, the tank had a leak along the seem. That morning there was a puddle under it. I patched the seem and I have no puddles.(from gas) The oil doesn't seem thin, so I don't think that's it. It has just turned cold here. Is there any rubber items that could be blowing out of cracks as the cold makes it shrink? Is it possible that the filler neck could do this? Any thoughts. My wife seems OK the the hunk of junk sitting beside her immaculate Miata, but if it continues to taint the smell of everything in the garage, she may give it the heave ho. Thanks for your help.
first I would check the filler neck....then start checking around the carb or any other rubber fuel lines.
I would start checking all the rubber parts. Fill pipe, fill vent line, tank vent lines. Then the fuel pump, fuel ine connections, the carb etc and if you have a charcoal canister the filter may be saturated and needs replacing. I'd bet on the 27 year old rubber parts/connections.

My 76 fuel filter has one inlet and two outlets. The center one goes to the carb and the outer goes back to the tank. Make sure the outer inlet is facing up not down. Then check the hose back to the tank as it may be broken.

I had a leaky return hose from the fuel filter. Couldn't find the leak or the source of the smell until I popped the hood right after running it; saw a puddle on the intake manifold. Yikes.

I had some holes starting on the front edge of the tank. The were forming behind a small plastic shield that was riveted onto the tank. Sand and dirt had packed up between the tank and shield, eventually wearing holes into the tank. I would never see a puddle, though, because the dirt let it seep out slowly and evaporate before a puddle would form.

OK, first, the 77 J10 is the truck I'm having probs with. That in mind, do I need to drop the tank in order to check the filler nech and whatnot. Also, is the multi line filter someone mentioned near the tank or is it under the hood. Finally, does anyone sell(like BJs or whatnot) the filler neck and goodies or do I have to go to a muffler shop like others have mentioned? Thanks again for your help.

Based on your title, I was going to ask about YOUR diet, but then your post clarified exactly what you were asking about...
... so never mind.

brad,
you're not having a run of good luck lately. i suspect brittle rubber parts as well.
bad gas cap or a leak from underneath fuel pump.

Mike, no good luck here! I PMed you a bit ago about the seat. Would it be better for you if I picked the seat up on a weeknight or weekend day? As to the gas smell thing, I just hope noone goes out to the garage on Turkey day for a smoke! :-0

Don't light up or use your torch!!!!
If you smell gas and can't find the leak the first place I would look is on the drivers side on the top of frame next to brake line. I have a 79 J-10 and 78 wagon that have the same problem .The lines are clamped together and they get wet and rust threw causing slow seepage. If you look right next to the steering shaft you will see it.
