allright you FSJ gurus out there. i know this may sound silly but how do i figure out the proper shock length for my lifted rig? its runnin +4" springs, SOA, rear shackle flip, 3" blocks out back, and a 2 " body lift.
what is a good intermediate shock for a decent price that you guys have found? 'm thinking either a rs9000rsx or procomp equivalent. i want something adjustable so i can run them a bit stiff on the street to help keep body roll down since i dont have a swaybar on it.
thanks guys i sure do appreciate the help:drivin:

For proper shock length you need to flew the rig and max out the suspension to measure to get your compressed/ extended lengths for the shocks. There really isnt a generic length for a certain lift as different combos flex differently.

Yup. You also want to make sure that the:
1) compressed length of the shock < compressed length (eye to eye) of suspension measurement at full flex
2) extended length of shock > extended (eye to eye) of suspension measurement at full flex
FWIW, on Brutus, I have different shocks on the front than the back.
As long as you fulfill these two requirements when you order shocks you won't have any problems with the shock limiting your flex (VERY BAD).

Easy... Assuming you are on full width axles, and dont mind hacking the fenders..
Here is how 38.5"s look with SOA ONLY, and I obivously have not trimmed a bit yet...

you sir are a bad influence:D i already had to hack off the rear fender flares of my WT due to rot and am wacking off the front here shortly as they are fairly banged up too. als i did forget to mention i am also running the bj's HD 1" lift front shackle. am i really at 15" of lift? it doesn't seem like that much but it must be from the nubbie lil tires i have on it.
if this is actaully possible i might just have to try out a set for the kicks and giggles factor of running such a rediculously huge tire. hopefully my lil 360 can turn them ok. will be putting 4.88 or 5.12 gears in the pumkins here soon hopefully. of coure i'll still try to gt a set of 40" or 42" so i can go play and flex out the suspension in the hills if i want

......am i really at 15" of lift?....
FRONT...
Springs + 4"s
SOA/SF + 6"s (at least)
Body Lift + 2"s
Shackles + 1"
TOTAL = 13"s
REAR....
Springs + 4"s
SOA/SF + 6"s (at least)
Body Lift + 2"s
Blocks + 3"
TOTAL = 15"s
What axles are you running?
BTW.. Thats still more lift that you will need to stretch out 42"s...

Procomp ES 3000 long travel are the longest travel mono tube shocks you can get, other than their ES 9000 ;)
Pro-Comp Explorer ES 3000 Long Travel:
EXP-ES336000 ES3000 (#32950 16687 on both front and rear shocks) With a 4" lift, there's no listing for the FSJ in the catalog, but it should be a #324509, per the Pro-Comp catalog.
Extended 36”
Collapsed 21”
Travel = 15”
Pro-Comp Explorer ES 9000 Long Travel:
EXP-ES936000 ES9000
Extended 36”
Collapsed 21”
Travel = 15”

dmntxn77: i only have a semi floating 14bolt outback and a hd44 up front but i an planning on swapping up to one ton gear as soon as i can find a good deal. also on that rear lift i did a home brew shackle flip where i cut off the shackle basket flipped it over and re-welded it back on the frame even with the 3" blocks out back it just about sits level front to rear now. not sure what will happen when i throw a set of revolver shackles out back.
elliott: thanks for the parts # i will have to look into those..
one more dumb question though... how do i go about flexing the suspension in my driveway to figure out the collapsed and extended lengths i will need??
edit: i was just thinking that i have a buddy with a slammed scion tc and it would be a killer pic if i could get him to park it under my jeep :)

what do you mean? i have a pic of the jeep with the lift on it. it just has some crappy tiny tires on it now though. if you want i'll post it again. i dont have the 52" tires yet, i just said i saw a set on ebay for hella cheap. kinda toying with the idea of saying why not and running those for a bit if i even managed to win the bid that is.

you can easily put in those 52's. it's all a matter of how much fender trimming you are willing to do. will your axles hold up? maybe.
