I called a parts supplier and ask him to find the highest amp, dual pulley alternator for the Wagoneer. He said it was for an '83 J truck, like a 85 or 90 amp job.

Anyone know if this will work on my 401 or have a better solution?

Thanks

I just had to replace the alt. in my 88 GW, and I coulda swore it was like a 90-92 amp or something. I remember because I was "complaining" cause it was like $70, and the parts guy said it cost more because of higher output. ???? All I know is that the 63 amp alternator for my '76 3/4 ton C***y snow plow truck was like $20- now that I like http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

Don't know for sure if this will work, but it is worth a try. A alt. off a '92-'96 YJ will put out about 120 amps. Only the heavy duty option, offered on some Sports and all Sahara trim packages. It will bolt to a 258, but I don't know about a AMC V8...never tried. Pick one up from a junk yard. Lots of people are doing this on the '87-'90 YJ's w/ 258's.

I may be off on this and some one can correct me, but the alt on my 93YJ which I have replaced twice is externally regulated by the computer. I think the one on my 88GW is internally controlled. I would do a little more research before swaping the YJ Alt.

Check out the article in Pettersons 4Whell Off Road, this month there are some excellent suggestions in it.

well, I have a 77 chief with a 401 and it came with i believe a 60 amp motorola, to rectify this painful situation, i got a standard delco 110 amp altinator. To get it to fit properly, all i needed to do was to go to a machine shop to have a new spacer made that was 3.75" long. fit fine, and works great.

I have an 85 GW w/ AMC360 and I put a 105 amp AC Delco in no problem at all. The only thing I did as far as mod's go is a custom adjustment arm. All that consisted of was cutting the stock arm in half just above the adjustment slide and welding off by about 1/2 inch or so. Been running like that for 2 years now. The only precaution I would recommend is make sure the arm isn't so far offset that it contacts the oil filter housing. Hope this'll help.

Oh yeah, I had to swap the stock dual pulley with the single groove pulley that the alt. came with, but that was just pulling the alt shaft nut and swapping, very easy to do.

I have a 130 amp Delco externally regulated with both ac and dc outputs. With a little ingenuity, sawzall, grinder, drill, and a welder anything will work.

Just pulled a 160 amp alt out of the 79 today. Like ibnfe mentioned, the adjustment arm was lengthened.
