Hey Guys, this is the last year for emmissions on my rig here in Wash. It passes everything except the HC at idle. Max is 600, Im running 1200.

I replaced vac hoses, checked timming, new plugs, cap and rotor. New PCV and EGR. Rebuilt the carb, checked mixture screws at 1 1/2" turns out. and changed oil. I put some fancy gas additive and ran the high octane at the pumps.

The muffler looks good. No major leaks. It does not have a catalitic converter and the left side emissions manifold is gone. The pump on the right side is still there with the right side emissions manifold though.

Do I need to install a emissions manifold on the left side to get this thing smelling good? I dont want it to be a stink bomb. It smells o.k at high speeds, but when I let off the gas at high speeds I can smell it pretty bad. Whats going on?

Sincerely yours,

Stinky in Seattle :(

Least expensive solution is probably a '77 title.

Get a PO box someplace other than King/Pierce Co. and register it there. Most of WA state doesn't have smog tests...just the urban areas. ;)

lean it some more, raise the float level a tad, dope the gas with 10-15% methanol. get the left side air injection working, new cat. if these fail, try bribery :D

Or, you could just change over to my EFI kit and eliminate the carb altogether.

I passed without a right side air manifold. If your year came with a cat, you will probably need to get one, otherwise you should be able to pass without it.
Go to www.smogsite.com (http://www.smogsite.com), "Five Gas Analysis" section, to compare all of your readings. Certain combinations of numbers can mean different things.
They say high HC alone at idle could be from a lean condition. Since the high HC goes away at higher RPM it might be that your EGR valve is open at idle (which it shouldn't) or you have an intake leak that doesn't matter as much at the higher RPM.
I think with a too rich condition your CO would be high also. Mine was when my power valve was blown.
Higher octane fuel only helps to lower NOx.
Go to the site and compare all of your numbers.
I've read on the board that not "some" but a bunch of the fuel additive might get you through.
Good Luck!

Without air injection the cat will toast itself from exhaust being to rich.Do you know if this is the original convertor?

I dont have the blues anymore!!!I passed!!!! Thanks for the help. My limit at crusie and idle was 600 on the HC's. I passed with a 66. :D

Is this really possible or do you think the emmissions guy did me a favor without telling me?

I replaced all I could replace and adjusted the carb. What a difference.

Anyway, I did pass and got my tabs!!! $95 bucks includes 42 dollar title transfer fee. Ching...ching! :D :D

Thanks again. Another victory in the Jeep world.

Those readings could be genuine. My GW just passed with a 55ppm HC on a 220 limit, and a 0.00% CO (!). That was just with a properly tuned carb, all emissions equipment in place and NO VACUUM LEAKS! Leaks can really throw everything off.
