ok i done some wheeling before but never in this. i got a 84 wagoneer for a trade. its ben through a few hands, a few incompetent hands. the guy who has it now says it was a 6 cyl originally, but im not sure. it now has a 318, and prolly a 727. t-case not sure of. it still has the 44 up front, but the rear isnt a dana, its rounded like the 8.25, but it doesnt have the rubber fill plug, so im lost on that. it has a homemade front bumper that resembles a front porch. had a winch at one time, but not anymore.
problems:
the motor has a few issues, wiring looks like a rats nest, but everything works right, just ugly and in the way. carb linkage is all effed up, have to manually bypass the high idle. lower rad hose leaks under pressure. thats about it for the motor, just minor b.s.
the rear hatch door thing. window quit rolling up at some point, so some idiot decided to take it off the track, and wrap some sheet metal-like straps around it and then screw it to the outside of the hatch (fugly).
the whole thing is camo! it really doesnt matter that much, its gonna get beat hard.

the good:
its not 6cyl power
its on brand new 33x12.50 TSL's
the rear is welded (not sure if that should be in the good or bad)
everything electrical works (cept the two passenger pwr windows)
the big *** bumper suck for approach, but annihilates trees
brand new upholstery (quality job, must not have been the owners doing)
3 inch body lift

advice needed,
where i wheel is a mixture of everything except hard core rocks.
dirt, and rock hills, lotsa huge ruts, mud, ( i hate mud, to expensive), lots of off camber hills mixes with ruts, and mud and fallen trees. and most of the trails are just big 4 wheeler trails. our usual line up is tj's, yj's, and xj's.
the one xj is midly cut for these trails. mirrors have been long gone (thats how tight these trails are). the advice im looking for is where to start modifying? besides the obvious fixing stuff.
my current plans:
spring over the front
4 inch springs plus whatever bock is needed to level it (cant find any 6" springs)
36's when the 33's are gone and some fender trimming
onboard air and welder (homemade of course)
and in the future some 404 portals.

i am a competent and certified mechanic and have full ability to do anything myself, so dont limit the suggestions.
thanks

Welcome to the board or the madness as some say, as for the suggestions if you are going spring over that will give you about 6-7in of lift with stock springs and by the way it sounds you run alot of tight trails so with lift springs and SOA you might not fit on those trails. But www.BJsoffroad.com (http://www.BJsoffroad.com) is a great website that is dedicated to the FSJ they also have the 6in springs again welcome and ask lots of questions these guys are all very intelligent when it comes to these things.

83-84 would be the front vac disconnect axle as I recall, cover looks different.
7027
I do not know much about them.
Unless major stuff has been changed I doubt it's a 318 (that's a Dodge thing I think). Stuff does happen to these things all the time, but that's not a common swap (many AMC guru's will be along to help, I am not one of them).

Welding The Rear:
Good or bad depending on how it was done (I still run a welded rear 14-Bolt, it's fine for the most part) I'm not sure how M23 holds up to that.

I'd skip the block in the back if you SOA the front (4 3/4" + the thickness of your front leaf pack for lift) usually about 6 3/4" lift.
Blocks just tend to not work out for needs like you have stated.

Your gear ratio will suck but that can be changed (if you go to Portal axles it will not matter much).

Anialiting trees is a bad thing, tread lightly, cut the big bumper back and make it work for you as opposed to being a disadvantage.

All that and welcome to IFSJA.

i know its a dodge motor, and am going on waht the guy told me.
i was wandering about the rear diff (the round one) i am leaning towards amc 20.
and i am gonna use the 4 in springs in the back, just use the blocks to level it since i cant get almost 7" of lift any other way.
and i fully support treading lightly, but this is a big truck, not a wrangler, so everyonce in a while i have to take out a small tree or two to widen the trail.

It should be an AMC-20. One thing about these things, they are kind of touchy when it comes to the wiring. I would suggest just using some tie wraps and wire wrap/electrician's tape to clean it up like it is. Welcome, and ask lots of questions. There's some purty fart smellers in here that can answer all your questions.

Hi from Oneonta... welcome to FSJs...

Sounds like you've got a good project truck.

Several places sell 6" springs, including Hell Creek, who's on here as Hellcreek. Tom will sell you just the springs if you need them. You can also mount the rear springs under the frame instead of the side of it to match the SOA. There's a guy up here on Blount Mountain who does custom fab for a living and it's a specialty of his. Tadsal, who just commented, also has a kit to do this. I'd love to see your truck sometime. We're having a get-together at my house on Dec. 8 to swap stories and ogle each other's trucks. Let me know if you're interested in coming...

I'd love to see where you wheel...

i would love to attend, if it is reliable by then. maybe you can come up and come wheeling with us sometime. in a few weeks we are planning a trail ride to little rock city from gadsden. its a nice trail, with two different lines around everything. got a good group of guys together to go, so far.
we were gonna do it this weekend but two of the tj's are down, and teh one xj is going to full floating 60's this weekend. so it got postponed.....
thanks for the warm welcome guys

I'll take you up on that if I've gotten tow points on the front... I'm open on both ends, and that concerns me... we'll talk though... I've done many an hour of wheeling, spotting, and trail bossing, just way out of practice.

Thanks for the invite back... hope you can make it even if you don't have your Jeep running. It won't matter just to meet and greet. I'm right up on top of the mountain up 231 from Ashville... just in Blount County.

dont even worrk about being open. only about half of the group is locked and only two locked front and rear. its not that hard of a trail, unless you want it to be.
and ill see if i can get a ride up there then (do you mind if i bring a friend, i dont have a license anymore, and will need a ride, prolly from the xj guy). sounds like it will be fun, just dont laugh at the home built redneck engineered xj. pm me a phone # or something and i will call you with time and everything if we go riding.
