If it is a NP229, the front diff doesn't turn in 2wd so it should effect on road drivablity.

The front diff does turn in 2wd, since the '88 had constant-drive front hubs.
But I don't know what effect it will have on driveability.
A rear locker should have a bigger effect on off-roadability than a front LS.

My '84 has constant drive hubs and it doesn't turn in 2wd. Only the spider gears turn since there is less resistance than turning the whole diff. Is there a differance in the 84 and 88?

Yes, the '83 and '84 Selectracs used a vacuum-disconnect front D44, which used a different front cover. They dropped that setup in '85 and later Selectrac models. I don't know if that disconnect d44 front carrier is the same as the non-disconnect, as the disconnect was right at the pumpkin.

Learned something new. The day was not a waste.
