View Full Version : Wiring under dash

I have noticed, both on my 85 CJ, and my 83 GW, that there are lots of unused wires and connecectors under the dash. AFAIK, my GW had every option avail, but I have no idea what all these wires are for. Any one else's like that?
Speaking of wiring, anyone know of a good source for wiring diagrams. The Haynes and Chilton ones seem too inaccurate and incomplete, IMO.

It is a one harness fits all and even though you have all the options, some options take the place of some plugs and others seem to be there for options that did not exist or were dealer installed. They do give you a place to hook up extra equipment. I sometimes wonder if AMC used the pass car harness' on Wags as the gauge cluster was stolen from the Gremlin/Hornet dash.

What's that big yellow box at the bottom of my fuse panel under the dash? It's about the size of a pack of smokes (non-PC measurement simile) and I think there's some type of relay in it. It's at the extreme bottom of the fuse panel on my '91 Wag, and I have to remove it every time I want to change a fuse. Haynes/Chiltons' doesn't mention it.

Not knowing for sure I'll guess it is the delay unit for the wipers.

That yellow box is prolly the cruise control module. I think im gonna give my underdash wiring harness a 'diet'. All that extra crap just gets in the way whenever i try to do somethin under there.

seriously, though, i have a question about a two-switch panel that is mounted on the bottom lip of my dash, below the glove box (72 wagoneer). the switches are the push-button type, click on, click off, and they have wires that run under the dash to the drivers side, above the parking break release and that's where they end. any ideas? one of my buddies thinks it was for a snow plow, but i can't find any evidence of there ever being one mounted on the front. thanks for any ideas!

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the cigarette pack-sized module is for the door and "lights left on" chime.

72Wag that inline fuse remark resembles our early Wags, must be nice to have all those modern utilites "D*nm youngsters got to have every thing cushy and easy, next they will want indoor plumbing!" Hmmm, just got an idea on how to heat water for a shower on my Waggie, Saabs with auto trannys had a inline tranny cooler mounted in the upper rad hose. Have to check out the imported b/y to see if i can find one. That would make it nice to clean off the heavy mud when done wheelin and freak out the buds.

I have seen these on the market, but then I would actually have to spend MONEY, which blows the whole idea behind my rig. It just kills me to have to go and buy something. My buddies are still in shock that I broke down and bought new tires last spring (wait till they see the new rims). I am a fabricating, scrounging, salavaging and horse trading fool.
Thanks for the info though, it did give me a laugh when I saw the price. I have found my water tank and pump and have a line on the heat exchanger. This poor Waggie of mine keeps getting heavier and heavier.
