Ryan (Gambler68) came by yesterday and we took a ride in his Viper Blue WT Cherokee up to around 10000 feet just 45 minutes from here. There is snow on the ground under the spruce up high. Stopped at the Ramparts for a few pictures and then on up higher. Had a diversion where I had a brain fart on directions. Once back on the right path we started seeing plenty of snow and ice. Then we reached an ice flow. The Cherk was well up on the ice, we felt slipping and Ryan stopped. Tried to get out but it was slick as what a mommy pelican chokes up for it's babies. I got back in and we backed down off of it. We probably could have got up and back OK, but I am sure it was just a sign of more to come. It was good to go high and take in the big trees and far views of NM, AZ and UT. We were on FR 566 in San Juan National Forest. There are mines in the area and we were trying to get up to see one that has a cool old sluice machine still pretty much intact.
After we got home, Ryan helped us with a little fencing project for the barnyard then we had pizza and a Blue Moon. =8-) Thanks Ryan!

Shoot you mean to to tell me you and Ryan let a little ice stop you! Let guess Ryan doesn't own a set tire chains. LOL Great pics

It was a beautiful drive. Heh Charlie, no chains. I figure if we need chains, no need to go there. It was me that started to fidget in my seat. Krista and I had a close call with Wally trying to bust snow up to Yankee Boy Basin. I have extreme respect for such things on the side of a mountain today.

Cool, nice views. Those trails look like they'd be passable by car if it weren't for the snow and ice.

fun day indeed!
not so fun: running out of gas 10 miles from home after dark. Having to walk a mile to someones house and borrowing 2 gallons.

This piece of wood was laying on the ground at our first stop. Ryan stepped out of the Jeep and it was right at his feet. That is the face I make when I see yet another thread about "what cam should I get?"

hahah!
yeah..I was feeling pretty dumb about not having spare gas..18 gallons to go 130 miles though? All I put in was about 10oz of marvel mystery oil..musta BLOWN my mileage. But it was worth it.

Looks like a blast! That is some gorgeous country.
Yeah Ryan, I was scouting for firewood a couple weeks ago & thought I had plenty of gas, but a lot of the driving was 1st & 2nd gear up & down the switchbacks. I didn't run out of gas, but sure was nervous when I saw the needle too close to "E" for comfort. Don't even want to know what the mileage is when you're crawling.

Nice pics Ryan.
That piece with the face on it is cool. Did you save it? It would look good on your front tree Flint.

of course I saved it :P
what was funnier was trekking a 20lb piece of pondo a few hundred feet back to the jeep.
